Please guard henhouse for us, minister!

-

RICK PARRY, chairman of the English Football League, still somehow clings to the quaint notion that his organisation can regulate the clubs within it.

In his letter to sports minister Tracey Crouch (below) this week he accepts the need for an independent body to be appointed to a new role – but tosses into the debate his belief that the EFL can be left to carry out the checks and balances.

It’s bad timing, given this week’s sorry evidence concerning Derby County and Reading.

Further examples from Wigan, Charlton and Bury – which all happened on the EFL’S watch – smash Parry’s argument into 1,000 pieces.

So, Ms Crouch please take note of the following warning: Leaving the EFL in charge of the finances would be like leaving a fox with a loaded revolver in charge of a henhouse.

Please do not go down that path.
