There’s plenty more to see in the Middleham area. The local buses run to the historic town of Richmond, where there’s another fine castle, and to the small city of Ripon with its cathedral and the World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.
Between Middleham and Ripon is a stark tower in the village of West Tanfield. This is Marmion Tower, its name borrowed by Sir Walter Scott for his verse epic (the one with Young Lochinvar).
It’s a travel motto of mine that wherever you go, you can never escape Sir Walter Scott. I’ve not been proved wrong yet.
