Elizabeth Taylor (1912-1975)

-

Elizabeth Taylor’s books are said to be a combination of “Wuthering Heights” and “Persuasion”. Kingsley Amis called her “one of the best English novelists born in this century.”

She wrote her first book, “At Mrs Lippincote’s”, during World War II, and then for over three decades she produced graceful if not always happy books.

She had a piercing eye and great wit. Her many short stories, often written for newspapers and magazines, were also collected into volumes.

Antonia Fraser has said that Elizabeth Taylor is “one of the most underrated writers of the twentieth century.” Her characters, mostly country folk, sadly fell out of fashion in the latter years of her career, when reading trends were leaning to more exotic stories.
