Sleeve seam: 44 cm (17¾ ins).

MATERIALS

8 (9, 9, 10, 11, 12) 50-gram balls of Stylecraft Batik DK (shade Pistachio, 1910). One pair each 3.25 mm

TENSION

22 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm measured over st-st using 4 mm needles.

RIGHT FRONT

With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 47 (53, 58, 64, 69, 75) sts and work 9 rows in g-st. Change to 4 mm needles and pattern:

1st row – (right side) – K1, ★ [P1, K2, yf, sl1, K2tog, psso, yf, K2] 5 (6,6, 7, 8, 8) times, P1 ★ , K5 (3,8, 6, 3, 9).

2nd and every alt row – Purl.

3rd row – As 1st.

5th row – K1, [P1, K2tog, yf, K3, yf, SKPO] 5 (6,6, 7, 8, 8) times, P1, K5 (3,8, 6, 3, 9). 7th row – As 1st.

9th row – K1, [P1, K3, yf, SKPO, K2] 5 (6,6, 7, 8, 8) times, P1, K5 (3,8, 6, 3, 9). 11th row – K1, [P1, K7] 5 (6,6, 7, 8, 8) times, P1, K5 (3,8, 6, 3, 9).

13th row – (on which position of medallions is reversed) – K5, ★ [P1, K2, yf, sl1, K2tog, psso, yf, K2]

5 (5,6, 7, 7, 8) times, P1 ★ , K1 (7,4, 2, 7, 5).

15th row – As 13th.

17th row – K5, [P1, K2tog, yf, K3, yf, SKPO] 5 (5,6, 7, 7, 8) times, P1, K1 (7,4, 2, 7, 5).

19th row – As 13th.

21st row – K5, [P1, K3, yf, SKPO, K2] 5 (5,6, 7, 7, 8) times, P1, K1 (7,4, 2, 7, 5). 23rd row – K5, [P1, K7] 5 (5,6, 7, 7, 8) times, P1, K1 (7,4, 2, 7, 5).

24th row – Purl.

These 24 rows set the pattern. Cont in pattern until work measures 37 cm from beginning, ending at side edge.

Shape armhole – Cast off 6 (7, 9, 10, 12, 13) sts at beginning of next row – 41 (46, 49, 54, 57, 62) sts. Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next 3 (5,5, 5, 7, 7) rows, then on every following alt row until 34 (38, 40, 45, 47, 50) sts remain.

Work straight until front measures 47 (48, 48, 48, 48, 49) cm from beginning, ending at front edge.

Shape neck – Cast off 12 (14, 14, 16, 16, 17) sts, at beg of next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 5 rows

– 17 (19, 21, 24, 26, 28) sts. Work straight until front measures 54 (55, 56, 57, 58, 60) cm from beginning, ending at armhole edge. Shape shoulder – Cast off 4 (5,5, 6, 6, 7) sts loosely at beginning of next row and the 2 foll alt rows –5 (4, 6, 6, 8, 7) sts.

Work 1 row. Cast off.

LEFT FRONT

Work to match right front but reversing sts at beginning and end of rows, thus 1st and 13th rows placing patt will be as follows:

1st row – K5 (3,8, 6, 3, 9), work as 1st row of right front from ★★to , K1.

13th row – K1 (7,4, 2, 7, 5), work as 13th row of right front from ★★to , K5.

BACK

With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 95 (105, 117, 127, 139, 151) sts and work 9 rows g-st. Change to 4 mm needles and beginning with a knit row, work in st-st until back measures same as fronts to armhole shaping, ending after a purl row.

Shape armholes – Cast off 6 (7, 9, 10, 12, 13) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 83 (91, 99, 107, 115, 125) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (5,5, 5, 7, 7) rows, then on every foll alt row until 69 (75, 81, 89, 95, 101) sts remain. Work straight until back measures same as fronts to shoulder shaping, ending after a purl row.

Shape shoulders – Cast off 4 (5,5, 6, 6, 7) sts loosely at beginning of next 6 rows, then 5 (4,6, 6, 8, 7) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 35 (37, 39, 41, 43, 45) sts. Slip remaining sts on a stitch-holder and leave.

SLEEVES

With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 43 (45, 47, 49, 51, 53) sts and work 9 rows in g-st.

Change to 4 mm needles and beginning with a knit row, work in st-st shaping sleeve by inc 1 st at each end of 1st row, then on every foll 8th (8th, 6th, 4th, 6th, 6th) row until there are 51 (63, 55, 57, 73, 89) sts, then on every following 10th (10th, 8th, 8th, 8th, 8th) row until there are 69 (73, 79, 83, 87, 93) sts. Work straight until sleeve measures 44 cm from beginning, ending after a purl row.

Shape top – Cast off 6 (7, 9, 10, 12, 13) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 57 (59, 61, 63, 63, 67) sts.

Work 0 (2,4, 6, 8, 10) rows straight.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and every following knit row until 29 (31, 33, 37, 37, 43) sts remain, then on every row until 19 (21, 23, 27, 27, 33) sts remain. Cast off.

TO COMPLETE

Join shoulders.

Neckband – With 3.25 mm needles and right side facing, pick up and knit 35 (38, 40, 45, 45, 47) sts evenly round right front neck, knit across 35 (37, 39, 41, 43, 45) sts from stitch-holder, finally pick up and knit 35 (38, 40, 45, 45, 47) sts evenly round left front neck – 105 (113, 119, 131, 133, 139) sts.

Work 4 rows in g-st.

Cast off to form picot thus: Cast off 3 sts, ★ slip st on right needle back on to left needle and cast on 2 sts, cast off 5 sts very firmly, repeat from ★ until 0 sts remain.

Front borders – With 3.25 mm needles, and right side facing, pick up and knit 120 (122, 122, 122, 122, 124) sts evenly along right front edge.

1st to 3rd rows – Knit.

4th row – Knit until 76 sts rem, [cast off 2 sts, K12 – including st on right needle after cast-off] 5 times, cast off 2 sts, knit to end.

5th row – Knit casting on

2 sts neatly where sts were cast off.

6th row – Knit.

Cast off to form picot as on neckband.

Work left border to match but omitting buttonhole­s.

To Make Up – Press work very lightly on wrong side following pressing instructio­ns on ball-band. Sew in sleeve tops. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Press seams. n
