Knitting: a hat and scarf set to brighten the dullest of days

Our fun, bright scarf and hat set comes in a selection of sizes to suit all ages.

MEASUREMEN­TS

Hat (to fit): toddler (child, small adult, medium adult, large adult). Circumfere­nce: 40 cm (15¾ ins), 44 (17¼), 48 (18¾), 53 (20¾) 58 (22¾). Scarf: child 18 cm (7 ins), adult 28 (11) width, 100 cm (40 ins), 150 (59 ins) length.

MATERIALS

2 (3) 100-gram balls of Rico Creative Glowworm Print in Multicolou­r 04 (adult) or Yellow-red 03 (child) for the scarf and 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) 100-gram ball(s) of Rico Creative Glowworm as above for the hat; Rico Designs 5 cm Faux Fur Pompom in Berry or Red. One pair each 7 mm (No. 2) and 8 mm (No. 0) knitting needles; cable needle.

TENSION

16 sts and 17 rows to 10 cm measured over cable pattern using 8 mm needles.

ABBREVIATI­ONS

Alt – alternate; beg – beginning;

C4B – slip the first 2 sts on to a cable needle and hold at the back of work, K2, then K2 from the cable needle

K– knit; P– purl; patt – pattern; rep – repeat; st(s) – stitch(es); tog – together;

T3B – slip the next st on to a cable needle and hold at the back of work, K2, then K1 from the cable needle;

T3F – slip the first 2 sts on to a cable needle and hold at the front of work, K1, then K2 from the cable needle.

Important Note

Directions are given for five sizes for the hat and two sizes for the scarf. Figures in brackets refer to the four/one larger size(s). Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to all sizes and are worked the number of times stated. HAT

With 7 mm needles cast on 44 (48, 56, 60, 64) sts.

1st rib row – ★ K2, P2, rep from ★ to end.

2nd rib row – As 1st rib row. These 2 rows form rib pattern. Repeat the last 2 rows until work measures 8 (9, 10, 11, 12) cm, ending after a 2nd rib row.

Change to pattern:

1st (right-side) row – Knit. 2nd row – K2 (2, 0, 0, 2),

★ K2 (3, 3, 2, 2), P2, K4, P2, rep from ★ until 2 (2, 1, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 1, 0, 2). 3rd row – K2 (2, 1, 0, 2),

★ T3F, K2, T3B, K2 (3, 3, 2, 2), rep from ★ until 2 (2, 0, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 0, 0, 2). 4th row – K2 (2, 0, 0, 2), ★ K3 (4, 4, 3, 3), P2, K2, P2, K1, rep from ★ until 2 (2, 1, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 1, 0, 2). 5th row – K2 (2, 1, 0, 2),

★ K1, T3F, T3B, K3 (4, 4, 3, 3), rep from ★ until 2 (2, 0, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 0, 0, 2). 6th row – K2 (2, 0, 0, 2),

★ K4 (5, 5, 4, 4), P4, K2, rep from ★ until 2 (2, 1, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 1, 0, 2).

7th row – K2 (2, 1, 0, 2),

★ K2, C4B, K4 (5, 5, 4, 4), rep from ★ until 2 (2, 0, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 0, 0, 2).

8th row – As 6th row.

9th row – K2 (2, 1, 0, 2),

★ K1, T3B, T3F, K3 (4, 4, 3, 3), rep from ★ until 2 (2, 0, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 0, 0, 2). 10th row – As 4th row.

11th row – K2 (2, 1, 0, 2), ★ T3B, K2, T3F, K2 (3, 3, 2, 2), rep from ★ until 2 (2, 0, 0, 2) sts rem, K2 (2, 0, 0, 2). 12th row – As 2nd row. The last 12 rows form pattern. Cont in pattern until 18 (20, 22, 24, 28) rows have been worked.

Working in garter stitch (knit every row), work crown: Shape crown – K1, ★ K2tog, K5, rep from ★ until 1 (5, 6, 3, 7) sts rem, K2tog 0 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1) times, K1 (3, 4, 1, 5) – 38 (41, 48, 51, 55) sts. 2nd and every alt row

– Knit.

3rd row – K1, ★ K2tog, K4, rep from ★ until 1 (4, 5, 2, 6) sts rem, K2tog 0 (1, 1, 1, 1) times, K1 (2, 3, 0, 4) – 32 (34, 40, 42, 46) sts.

5th row – K1, ★ K2tog, K3, rep from ★ until 1 (3, 4, 1, 5) sts rem, K2tog 0 (1, 1, 0, 1) times, K1(1, 2, 1, 3) – 26 (27, 32, 34, 37) sts.

7th row – K1, ★ K2tog, K2, rep from ★ until 1 (2, 3, 1, 4) sts rem, K2tog 0 (1, 1, 0, 1) times, K1 (0, 1, 1, 2) – 20 (20, 24, 26, 28) sts.

9th row – K1, ★ K2tog, K1, rep from ★ until 1 (1, 2, 1, 0) sts rem, K2tog 0 (0, 1, 0, 0) times, K1 (1, 0, 1, 0) – 14 (14, 16, 18, 19) sts.

TO COMPLETE

Leave a long tail and thread this through the remaining sts. Pull tight and use to stitch the seam down the back of the hat. Weave in ends. Attach pompom to the top of the hat.

SCARF

With 7 mm needles, cast on 28 (44) sts and work in K2, P2 rib as given for hat until work measures 10 cm, ending after a 2nd row. Change to 8 mm needles. 1st row – K6, [K10, C4B, K2] once (twice), K6.

2nd row – K6, [K2, P4, K2, P2, K4, P2] once (twice), K6. 3rd row – K6, [T3F, K2, T3B, K1, T3B, T3F, K1] once (twice), K6.

4th row – K6, [K1, [P2, K2] 3 times, P2, K1] once (twice), K6.

5th row – K6, [K1, T3F, T3B, K1, T3B, K2, T3F] once (twice), K6.

6th row – K6, [P2, K4, P2, K2, P4, K2] once (twice), K6. 7th row – K6, [K2, C4B, K10] once (twice), K6.

8th row – As 6th row.

9th row – K6, [K1, T3B, T3F, K1, T3F, K2, T3B] once (twice), K6.

10th row – As 4th row. 11th row – K6, [T3B, K2, T3F, K1, T3F, T3B, K1] once (twice), K6.

12th row – K6, [K2, P4, K2, P2, K4, P2] once (twice), K6. Work in cable pattern as now set until work measures approx. 90 (140) cm, ending after a 12th row. Change to 7 mm needles and complete by working in K2, P2 rib as given for the hat until rib measures 10 cm, ending after a 2nd rib row. Cast off in rib.

Block scarf if required. n
