The People's Friend

Star Letter

-

As a farmer’s daughter I was raised not to waste anything, so I really enjoyed reading the recent article on recycling.

I began work away from the farm in a textile shippers’ office back in 1939 and was quickly in love with the fabrics, but it wasn’t long before war broke out and I had to register for National Service and joined the National Fire Service.

We quickly realised that Christmas for the children would be poor, so we all made toys. In the beginning this was for the orphans of fire officers, but it widened to neighbours’ children and then my own.

All these years later and I’m still making things and have been with a patchwork group for over 20 years. I’m always kept busy making things for charity – one particular quilt even raised over £500!

The two photographs here show some of the work I’ve done to help raise funds and I’m delighted to say that I seldom need to buy fabric as much is given to me and recycled.

I enjoyed the suggestions in your article and will continue recycling.
