A quick guide from consumer expert Lorna Cowan.

THE nights may be getting colder, but there’s no need for you to shiver at bedtime. An electric blanket can keep you cosy throughout the winter months, and soothe aching muscles and joints, too. What’s more, some manufacturers claim they cost as little as 1p per night to run, so there’s no excuse not to be as snug as a bug.

However, if you’ve been using your current electric blanket for more than 10 years, or if it’s looking worn or making strange noises or smells, it is advisable to look for a replacement. Here’s what you need to know before you go shopping. blanket, or placed inside a duvet cover. What to look for

Some electric blankets come with three heat settings, others have up to nine. A handy feature is the “quick heat-up” setting which warms your sheets in as little as five minutes – useful if it’s bedtime and you’ve forgotten to switch on your blanket.

The “multi-zone control” allows you to heat different areas of the bed to different temperatures – the feet setting ensures toes are kept toasty.

If you share your bed with someone who doesn’t feel the cold quite as much as you do, or vice versa, get dual controls. This will allow you both to set your side of the bed to your preferred heat. Digital controls with an illuminated LED screen will make them even easier to use.

Although many electric blankets can be safely used all night, for those who prefer the heat to be switched off, an “automatic shut-off” feature lets you set a timer so you won’t need to worry if you nod off. If you’re sleeping with your blanket on, a “thermo control” will monitor the temperature in your bedroom and adjust the heat output to keep your bedding warm.

Some electric blankets are washable and come with detachable controls, so you are able to launder it easily in your washing machine, and in some instances, pop it in the tumble dryer. n
