Knitting: a touch of luxury with our cable and rib top in cotton and silk yarn

Our cable and rib top with three-quarter sleeves is worked in a beautiful cotton and silk yarn for a touch of luxury.

MEASUREMEN­TS

To fit sizes: 76/81 cm (30/32 ins), 86/91 cm (34/36), 97/102 (38/40), 107/112 (42/44), 117/122 (46/48), 127/132 (50/52). Actual size:

85 cm (33¾ ins), 94 (37¼), 106 (41¾), 116 (45¼), 126 (49¼), 137 (54). Length: 56 cm (22 ins), 57 (22½), 58 (23), 59 (23¼), 60 (23¾), 62 (24½). Sleeve seam: 32 cm (12½ ins).

MATERIALS

7 (7,8, 8, 9,9) 50-gram balls of King Cole Finesse Cotton Silk DK (shade English Rose 2813). One pair each 3.25 mm (No. 10) and 4 mm (No. 8) knitting needles; a cable needle. TENSION

22 sts and 28 rows to 10 cm measured over stocking-stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) using 4 mm needles.

ABBREVIATI­ONS

Alt – alternate; beg – beginning; CB – slip next 4 sts on cable needle to back of work, K4, now K4 from cable needle; CF – slip next 4 sts on cable needle to front of work, K4, now K4 from cable needle; dec – decreasing; inc – increasing; K– knit;

P– purl; rem – remain; rep – repeat; st(s) – stitch(es); tog – together.

Important Note

Directions are given for six sizes. Figures in brackets refer to the five larger sizes. Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to all sizes and are worked the number of times stated. When writing to us with your queries, you must enclose a stamped, addressed envelope if you would like a reply.

FRONT

With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 92 (100, 112, 120, 132, 144) sts.

1st row (wrong side) – K1, [P2, K2] until 3 sts rem, P2, K1. 2nd row – K3, [P2, K2] to last st, K1.

3rd row – Purl inc 1 (3, 3, 5, 5, 5) sts evenly across row

– 93 (103, 115, 125, 137, 149) sts.

Change to 4 mm needles and pattern:

1st row (right side) – K4 (3, 6, 2, 5, 2), P5, [K1, P5] 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) times, K8, P5, [K1, P5] 5 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) times, K8, P5, [K1, P5] 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) times, K4 (3, 6, 2, 5, 2). 2nd row – P4 (3, 6, 2, 5, 2), K5, [P1, K5] 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) times, P8, K5, [P1, K5] 5 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) times, P8, K5, [P1, K5] 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) times, P4 (3, 6, 2, 5, 2).

These 2 rows set the basic rib pattern.

Continue in pattern until work measures 25 cm, ending after a wrong-side row.

Work cables –

1st row (cable row) – Work across 21 (26, 29, 31, 34, 37) sts, CB, work across centre 35 (35, 41, 47, 53, 59) sts, CF, work to end.

2nd to 10th rows – Beg with a 2nd row work 9 rows of basic rib pattern.

11th row – As cable row. Continue with basic rib pattern only and work straight until front measures 39 cm from beginning, ending after

2nd row. Place a marker at centre of last row. Shape armholes – Cast off 5 (6, 7, 7, 8, 9) sts loosely at beg of next 2 rows – 83 (91, 101, 111, 121, 131) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (5, 5, 7, 9, 9) rows, then on every foll alt row until 71 (77, 83, 89, 95, 101) sts rem. Work straight until front measures 11 (11, 12, 12, 12, 13) cm from marker, ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape neck – Work across 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) sts, turn. Continue on these sts for left half of neck.

Work 5 rows dec 1 st at neck edge on every row – 15 (17, 19, 21, 23, 25) sts.

Work straight until front measures 17 (18, 19, 20, 21, 23) cm from marker, ending at armhole edge.

Shape shoulder – Cast off 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts loosely at beg of next row and the 2 foll alt rows – 3 (5, 4, 6, 5, 7) sts. Work 1 row straight. Cast off. With right side facing, slip next 31 (33, 35, 37, 39, 41) sts (centre sts) on to a stitchhold­er and leave.

Neatly rejoin yarn to rem 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) sts and work to end of row. Complete as left half.

BACK

Omitting neck shaping, work as front to shoulder shaping, ending after a wrong-side row. Shape shoulders – Cast off 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts loosely at beg of next 6 rows, then 3 (5, 4, 6, 5, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 41 (43, 45, 47, 49, 51) sts.

Slip rem sts on a stitch-holder and leave.

RIGHT SLEEVE

1st half – With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 24 (27, 30, 32, 34, 36) sts.

1st row (right side) – K3 (6, 3, 5, 7, 3), P5, [K1, P5] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 4) times, K4.

2nd row – P4, [K5, P1] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 4) times, K5, P3 (6, 3, 5, 7, 3).

★★ Change to 4 mm needles and repeat the last 2 rows 6 times more, then 1st row again. AT THE SAME TIME inc 1 st at side edge (i.e. beg of row) on 3rd (3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 5th, 5th) row following, then on the following 8th (8th, 8th, 8th, 6th, 6th) row -– 26 (29, 32, 34, 36, 38) sts ★★ .

Break off yarn and slip sts on a stitch-holder and leave.

2nd half – Cast on as 1st half. 1st row (right side) – K4, [P5, K1] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 4) times, P5, K3 (6, 3, 5, 7, 3).

2nd row – P3 (6, 3, 5, 7, 3), K5, [P1, K5] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 4) times, P4.

Work as 1st half from ★★ to ★★ but working increases at end of row.

Next row (wrong side)

– Work to end, now with wrong side facing, work across sts of first half as they present – 52 (58, 64, 68, 72, 76) sts.

Next row – Work across 22 (25, 28, 30, 32, 34) sts, CF, work to end.

Work 9 rows knitting all the knit sts and purling all purl sts as they present AT THE SAME TIME inc 1 st at each end of 4th (4th, 4th, 4th, 2nd, 2nd) row, then on the following 0 (0, 0, 0, 6th, 6th) row – 54 (60, 66, 70, 76, 80) sts.

Next row – Work across 23 (26, 29, 31, 34, 36) sts, CF, work to end.

Cables are now complete. Work 1 (1, 1, 1, 3, 3) rows straight with ribs as set.

Inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 8th row until there are 64 (70, 76, 80, 82, 86) sts, then on every foll 10th (10th, 10th, 10th, 8th, 8th) row until there are 68 (74, 80, 84, 90, 94) sts.

Work straight until sleeve measures 32 cm from beginning, ending after a wrongside row. Next row – Cast off 5 (6, 7, 7, 8, 9) sts loosely at beg of next 2 rows – 58 (62, 66, 70, 74, 76) sts.

Work 0 (0, 2, 2, 4, 6) rows straight.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll alt row until 40 (42, 48, 50, 56, 60) sts rem, then on every row until 28 (30, 36, 38, 44, 48) sts rem.

Cast off loosely.

LEFT SLEEVE

Work as right sleeve but working CB in place of CF.

TO COMPLETE

Join left shoulder seam. Neckband – With 3.25 mm needles and right side facing, knit across 41 (43, 45, 47, 49, 51) sts of back, pick up and knit 20 (22, 22, 24, 24, 26) sts evenly down left side of neck, knit across 31 (33, 35, 37, 39, 41) sts of front, finally pick up and knit 20 (22, 22, 24, 24, 26) sts up right side of neck – 112 (120, 124, 132, 136, 144) sts.

Work 4 rows in rib as given for front.

Cast off evenly in rib.

To Make Up – Join right shoulder and neckband. Sew in sleeve tops. Join side and sleeve seams. n
