76/81 cm (30/32 ins), 86/91 (34/36), 97/102 (38/40), 107/112 (42/44), 117/122 (46/48), 127/132 (50/52). Actual size: 93 cm (36½ ins), 103 (40½), 113 (44½), 123 (48½), 133 (52½), 143 (56½). Length: 60 cm (23¾ ins ), 61 (24¼), 61 (24¼), 62 (24¾), 63 (25), 63 (25).

Sleeve seam: 44 cm (17¾ ins).

MATERIALS

5 (6, 6, 7, 7, 7) 100-gram balls of Stylecraft Alpaca Tweed Chunky (shade Aran 1658). One pair each 5 mm (No. 6) and 6 mm (No. 4) knitting needles; a 5 mm (No. 6) crochet hook (optional). For yarn stockists telephone 01535 609798 or e-mail info@stylecraft­ltd.co.uk.

TENSION

16 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm measured over st-st using 5 mm needles.

Pocket Linings (make 2)

With 5 mm needles, cast on 23 sts.

1st row – (right side) – P2, K19, P2.

2nd row – K2, P19, K2.

3rd row – P3, [K1, P1] 9 times, P2.

4th row – K3, [P1, K1] 9 times, K2.

5th and 6th rows – As 1st and 2nd.

7th row – P2, [K1, P1] 10 times, P1.

8th row – K2, [P1, K1) 10 times, K1.

Repeat these 8 pattern rows until work measures approx. 15 cm, ending after 4th row. Break off yarn and slip sts on a spare needle.

RIGHT FRONT

With 6 mm needles, cast on 50 (54, 58, 62, 66, 70) sts. 1st row – (right side) – K9, P2, K1, [P1, K1] to end.

2nd row – P1, [K1, P1] until 11 sts rem, K2, P9.

3rd row – K9, P2, knit to end. 4th row – Purl until 11 sts rem, K2, P9.

5th row – K9, P3, [K1, P1] until 2 sts rem, K2.

6th row – P2, [K1, P1] until 12 sts rem, K3, P9.

7th and 8th rows – As 3rd and 4th.

Repeat these 8 pattern rows 4 times more, then 1st row again.

Work pocket – Pattern 5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15), cast off next 23 sts evenly in rib, pattern to end.

Change to 5 mm needles. Next row – K9, P2, K11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 21), then P2, K19, P2 across a group of 23 pocket lining sts, K5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15).

Next row – P5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15), K2, P19, K2, purl until 11 sts rem, K2, P9.

Next row – K9, P2, K11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 21), P2, [K1, P1] 10 times, P1, K5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15).

Work 1 more row as set continuing to work the alternatin­g rib pattern as before across pocket section to form a panel for the front. Shape side – Decrease 1 st at side edge on next row then every following 10th row until 46 (50, 54, 58, 62, 66) sts remain.

Work 1 row straight.

Shape front slope – K9, P2, K2tog tbl, work to end. Work 3 rows straight. Repeat the last 4 rows until 34 (37, 41, 44, 47, 51) sts remain.

Work a few rows straight until front measures 60 (61, 61, 62, 63, 63) cm from beginning, ending at side edge.

Shape shoulder – Cast off 5 (6, 6, 7, 8, 8) sts at beginning of next row and the 3 following alt rows, then 5 (4, 8, 7, 6, 10) sts at beginning of next alt row – 9 sts.

Work 14 (15, 15, 16, 17, 17) rows straight for neck border. Cast off loosely.

LEFT FRONT

With 6 mm needles, cast on 50 (54, 58, 62, 66, 70) sts. 1st row – (right side) – K1, [P1, K1] until 11 sts rem, P2, K9.

2nd row – P9, K2, P1, [K1, P1] to end.

3rd row – Knit until 11 sts rem, P2, K9.

4th row – P9, K2, purl to end.

5th row – K2, [P1, K1] until 12 sts rem, P3, K9.

6th row – P9, K3, [P1, K1] until 2 sts rem, P2.

7th and 8th rows – As 3rd and 4th.

Repeat these 8 pattern rows 4 times more, then 1st row again.

Work pocket – P9, K2, pattern 11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 21), cast off next 23 sts evenly in rib, pattern to end. Change to 5 mm needles. Next row – K5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15), then P2, K19, P2 across remaining pocket lining sts, K11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 21), P2, K9.

Next row – P9, K2, P11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 21), K2, P19, K2, P5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15).

Next row – K5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15), P2, [K1, P1] 10 times, P1, knit until 11 sts rem, P2, K9.

Work 1 more row as set, continuing to work the alternatin­g rib pattern as before across pocket section to form a panel.

Shape side – Decrease 1 st at side edge on next row then every following 10th row until 46 (50, 54, 58, 62, 66) sts remain.

Work 1 row straight. Shape front slope and complete as right front noting that front slope decrease row will be – Work until 13 sts rem, K2tog, P2, K9.

BACK

With 6 mm needles cast on 81 (89, 97, 105, 113, 121) sts.

1st row (right side) – K1, [P1, K1] to end.

2nd row – P1, [K1, P1] to end.

3rd row – Knit.

4th row – Purl.

5th row – K2, [P1, K1] to last st, K1.

6th row – P2, [K1, P1] to last st, P1.

7th and 8th rows – As 3rd and 4th.

Repeat these 8 rows 4 times more, then 1st and 2nd rows again.

Change to 5 mm needles and beginning with a knit row, work 4 rows in st-st.

Shape side – Decrease 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 10th row until 73 (81, 89, 97, 105, 113) sts remain.

Work straight until back measures same as fronts to shoulder shaping, ending after a purl row. Shape shoulder – Cast off 5 (6, 6, 7, 8, 8) sts at beginning of next 8 rows, then 5 (4, 8, 7, 6, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 23 (25, 25, 27, 29, 29) sts.

Cast off.

TO COMPLETE

Join shoulders. Join cast-off edges of neck border, then stitch inner edge to cast-off stitches of back neck.

Front edging (optional) – With 5 mm crochet hook and right side facing, rejoin yarn to lower corner of right front and work as follows:

1st row – 1 chain, now work 1 double crochet into every alt row end along right front edge, back neck then left front edge, turn.

2nd row – 1 chain, miss 1 double crochet, now work 1 double crochet into each st to end.

Fasten off.

To Make Up – With wrong side facing, block work to size and shape by pinning out round the edges. Press work very lightly on wrong side following pressing instructio­ns. Stitch down pocket linings neatly on wrong side. Join side seams, leaving approx. 24 (25, 26, 28, 29, 30) cm free for armholes. Press seams. n
