Knitting: make our traditional Shetland shawl in beautiful lace yarn

Created in a Shetland lace yarn using traditional stitches, our shawl is the ideal way to welcome a new arrival.

MATERIALS

Change to 80 cm needle. From border lace pick up 640 sts, [knit 160 sts through back loops] 4 times, putting in marker threads at the end of each 160 sts (i.e. at the four corners). Work in rounds. Note: Instructions are given for one side only, worked four times continuously up to and including 97th row of main border. Figures given refer to stitches on one side.

The centre is worked over 73 sts on side 1, taking tog the last st of each row with one st from the side. At the end of pattern rows take st from side 2, at the end of purl rows take from side 4. Side 3 is grafted together with side 1 after centre is completed.
