Welcome

The People's Friend - - News - Angela Gilchrist, Editor.

to the first of two bumper festive issues that we’ll be producing for you this year. We’ve packed it full of great reading to keep you entertained for two weeks until our next bumper issue, dated December 22, goes on sale on December 19.

There are so many highlights in this issue I hardly know where to start! It includes four serial instalments, an amazing 17 new short stories and a host of features.

I must make special mention of our exclusive interview with violin virtuoso Andre Rieu on page 44, as I know he’s a huge favourite with “Friend” readers. I also thoroughly enjoyed Alex Corlett’s feature about the classic movie “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” on page 110. Incredibly, it’s 50 years since its original release! I have very fond memories of watching this film as a little girl, though I always covered my eyes when the Child Catcher appeared.

If you’re looking for easy, satisfying meals to serve in the run-up to the big day, we have four pages of fool-proof recipes from the Dairy Diary on page 71. And even I am tempted to have a go at knitting the adorable little snowman on page 50. I’m told he’s super easy to make – just as well, given my lack of skill with a pair of knitting needles!

If you’re looking for some last-minute present ideas, why not consider giving a book? On page 58 we have a selection of some of the most Christmassy titles around that will delight the book-lovers in your life.

Finally, don’t miss Polly Pullar’s wonderful feature about owls on page 88, which is accompanied by a selection of her fabulous photographs, or our festive catch-up with Emma and PAT dog Hansie on page 40 as they spread some Christmas cheer.
