The People's Friend

The Story So Far

-

EMILY CALLOW is working at a sewing centre in San Francisco in the aftermath of the terrible earthquake. Her childhood friend, WILL, wants her to return to England with him, but Emily knows she is needed here.

Back home at the FARRINGTON estate, Emily’s father JOSEPH and stepmother SARAH look forward to her letters and those from her sister, JENNY, now married to BEN HANSHAW. They have moved to a nearby village to work for LORD ROBERT BRACKEN and his wife, ELEANOR.

Ben has plans for the garden, but his hopes are dashed when he learns the Brackens won’t be there full-time. Have he and Jenny made a mistake in leaving their employment at Farrington House?

Unbeknown to them, however, the cashstrapped Farringtons are having to let estate workers and servants go.

Lord Farrington’s son BERTRAND has married an American, THEA, who plans to build a motorracing track in the grounds to attract visitors and raise money.

A family dinner is disturbed by the arrival of HUGH, Lord Farrington’s elder brother, who ran away as a young man.

Now he has returned, bringing with him his African wife, MALAIKA.
