Knit this vintage Sanquhar style sweater

Worked in a Shetland yarn featuring a traditiona­l Sanquhar pattern, our sweater reflects our great knitting heritage.

MEASUREMEN­TS

To fit sizes: 86 cm (34 ins), 91 (36), 97 (38), 102 (40), 107 (42), 112 (44). Actual size: 96 (37¾), 102 (40), 105 (41), 108 (42½), 114 ( 44¾), 117 (46). Length: 53 cm (20¾ ins), 54 (21), 55 (21¾), 56 (22), 57 (22½), 58 ( 22¾). Sleeve length: 28 cm (11 ins), 28 (11), 30 (11¾), 30 (11¾), 32 (12½), 32 (12½).

MATERIALS

6 (6, 8, 8, 9, 9) 25-gram balls of Jamieson & Smith 2-ply lace-weight in Blue L63 ( M) and 2 25-gram balls in Natural White L1 ( C). One pair each 2.75 mm (No. 12) and 3.25 mm (No.10) knitting needles.

TENSION

27 sts and 40 rows to 10 cm measured over st-st using 3.25 mm needles.

Important Note

BACK

With 2.75 mm needles and M, cast on 130 (138, 146, 154, 158, 166) sts.

1st (right-side) row – ★ K2, P2, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, K2.

2nd row – ★ P2, K2, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, P2. 3rd row – ★ K2C, P2M, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, K2C. 4th row – ★ P2C, K2M, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, P2C. Rep last 2 rows for 3 cm, ending after a wrong-side row. Break off C.

Change to 3.25 mm needles and beginning with a knit row, work 8 rows in st-st.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and the foll 7 8th rows – 114 (122, 130, 138, 142, 150) sts.

Work 9 rows.

Increase 1 stitch at each end of next row and the foll 7 6th rows – 130 (138, 146, 154, 158, 166) sts.

Work straight until back measures 35 cm from cast-on edge, ending after a wrongside row.

Shape raglans – Cast off

6 sts at start of next 2 rows — 118 (126, 134, 142, 146, 154) sts.

Dec 1 stitch at each end of next row and foll 3 alt rows – 110 (118, 126, 134, 138, 146) sts.

Work 1 row, ending after a wrong-side row.

Work in pattern from chart, reading odd-number (knit) rows from right to left and even-numbered (purl) rows from left to right.

To begin working from the chart, count back 11 (4, 8, 12, 3, 7) sts from the right hand arrow on the 22-st pattern repeat. Mark it as your starting point. Note where you end on this row and begin in the same place for the next row.

1st row – K2tog, work 9 (2, 6, 10, 1, 5) st(s) before the arrow on 1st row of chart, work the 22-st pattern repeat 4 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6) times in all, work 9 (2, 6, 10, 1, 5) sts beyond the second arrow, K2tog.

2nd row – Work 10 (3, 7, 11, 2, 6) sts before the left hand arrow on 2nd row of chart, work the 22-st pattern repeat 4 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6) times in all, work 10 (3, 7, 11 , 2, 6) sts beyond the right hand arrow. Continue to work in pattern from chart as now set and AT THE SAME TIME dec one stitch at each end of next row and foll 8 alt rows, ending after a wrong-side (20th) row – 90 (98, 106, 114, 118, 126) sts. Break off C.

Working in M only, dec 1 stitch at each end of next row and every alt row until 58 (70, 78, 90, 90, 102) sts rem, ending after a wrong-side row ★★ . Dec 1 stitch at each end of every row until 34 (34, 38, 38, 42, 42) sts rem. Leave sts on a holder.

FRONT

Work as for back to ★★ . Dec 0 (1, 1, 1, 1,1) stitch at each end of every row until 58 (58, 62, 62, 66, 66) sts rem. Divide for neck –

Next (right-side) row – K2tog, K18 (18, 19, 19, 20, 20) sts, turn and leave rem sts on a spare needle.

Dec 1 stitch at each end of next 4 rows – 11 (11, 12, 12, 13, 13) sts.

Next row — Purl until 2 sts rem, P2tog.

Next row — K2tog, knit until 2 sts rem, K2tog.

Rep last 2 rows twice more. Cast off.

Return to sts on spare needle. With right side facing, slip first 18 (18, 20, 20, 22, 22) sts on to a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, knit until 2 sts rem, K2tog. Complete this side to match first side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES

With 2.75 mm needles and M, cast on 58 (58, 66, 66, 70, 70) sts and work 3 cm in rib as for back, ending after a right-side row.

Next row — Rib 9 (9, 13, 13, 10, 10), ★ m1, rib 8 (8 13, 13, 10, 10), rep from ★ 4 (4, 2, 2 4, 4) times more, m1, rib 9 (9, 14, 14, 10, 10) – 64 (64, 70, 70, 76, 76) sts.

Break off C.

Change to 3.25 mm needles and, beginning with a knit row, work in st-st, increasing 1 stitch at each end of 5th (5th, 5th, 5th, 7th, 7th) row, then on the 5 (5, 2, 2, 0, 0) foll 6th rows then on every 8th row until there are 92 (92, 98, 98, 104, 104) sts.

Work straight until sleeve measures 28 (28, 30, 30, 32, 32) cm from cast-on edge, ending after a wrong-side row. Shape raglans — Cast off

6 sts at start of next 2 rows — 80 (80 86, 86, 92, 92) sts. Work 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and foll 4th row – 76 (76, 82, 82, 88, 88) sts.

Work 1 row.

Work in pattern from chart beginning by counting back 5 (5, 8, 8, 11, 11) sts from the right hand arrow on the 22-st pattern repeat. Mark it as your starting point. Note where you end on this row and begin in the same place for the next row.

1st (right-side) row – [K2tog] 1 (0, 1, 0, 1, 0) time, work 3 (5, 6, 8, 9, 11) sts before first arrow on 1st row of chart, work the 22-st pattern repeat 3 times in all, work 3 (5, 6, 8, 9, 11) sts beyond the second arrow, [K2tog] 1 (0, 1, O, 1, 0) time – 74 (76, 80, 82, 86, 88) sts.

2nd row — Work 4 (5, 7, 8, 10, 11) sts before left hand arrow on 2nd row of chart, work the 22-st pattern repeat 3 times in all, work 4 (5, 7, 8, 10, 11) sts beyond the right hand arrow.

Continue to work in pattern from chart as now set and at the same time, dec 1 stitch at each end of next row and foll 8 alt rows, ending after a wrong-side (20th) row. Break off B.

Continue in M, dec 1 stitch at each end of next row and every foll alt row until 14 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18) sts rem, ending after a wrong-side row. Leave sts on a holder.

TO COMPLETE

Leaving right back raglan seam free, join remaining raglan seams.

Neckband — With 2.75 mm needles, right side facing and M, K34 (34, 38, 38, 42, 42) sts from holder at back neck, K14 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18) sts from left sleeve, pick up and knit 15 (15, 14, 14, 15, 15) sts down left front neck edge, K18 (18, 20, 20, 22, 22) sts from holder at front neck, pick up and knit 15 (15, 14, 14, 15, 15) sts up right front neck edge, K14 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18) sts from right sleeve – 110 (110, 118, 118, 130, 130) sts.

1st row — wrong side —

★ P2C, K2M, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, P2C.

2nd row — ★ K2C, P2M, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, K2C. Rep these 2 rows for 3 cm, ending after a wrong-side row. Break off C.

Next row — With M, ★ K2, P2, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, K2. Next row — ★ P2, K2, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, P2. Cast off loosely in rib.

To Make Up — Join the remaining raglan and neckband seam. ■

Sanquhar knitting originated in the 18th century when skilled knitters created gloves and stockings in this twocoloure­d intricate pattern, named after the Borders village they lived in.
