This beautiful sweater is worked in a melange yarn which does all the colour shading for you.

MEASUREMEN­TS

To fit sizes: 81/86 cm (32/34 ins), 91/97 (36/38), 102/107 (40/42), 112/117 (44/46), 122/127 (48/50).

Actual size: 94 cm (37 ins), 107 (42), 118 (46½), 128 (50½), 141 (55½).

Length: 60 cm (23¾ ins), 62 (24½), 66 (26), 69 (27¼), 71 (28).

Sleeve length: 46 cm (18 ins), 46 (18), 47 (18½), 48 (19), 48 (19).

MATERIALS

9 (10, 11, 12, 13) 50-gram balls of Rico Design Creative Melange Chunky

in Yellow Teal (064). One pair each 6 mm (No. 4) and 6.5 mm (No. 3) knitting needles; stitch-holders; stitch markers.

TENSION

14 sts and 18 rows to 10 cm measured over pattern using 6.5 mm needles.

ABBREVIATI­ONS

alt – alternate;

beg – beginning;

cont – continue;

dec 1 – decrease 1 st (worked over 4 sts) on a right-side row, work K2, ssk at the beg and K2tog, K2 at the end of row; on a wrong-side row, work P2, P2tog at the beg and P2tog tbl, P2 at the end of a row;

foll – following;

g-st – garter-st (knit every row);

K– knit;

m1– make one st by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and knitting into the back of it;

P– purl;

patt – pattern;

rem – remain;

rep – repeat;

SKPO – sl1, K1, pass slipped st over;

sl– slip;

ssk – slip two stitches knitwise one at a time, knit two slipped stitches together through back of loop;

st(s) – stitches;

tbl – through back of loop;

tog – together;

yf– yarn forward.

Important Note

Directions are given for five sizes. Figures in brackets refer to the four larger sizes. Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to all sizes and are worked the number of times stated. When writing to us you must enclose an SAE if you would like a reply.

BACK

With 6.5 mm needles, cast on 68 (77, 85, 92, 101) sts. Work in patt as follows:

1st row (right side) – Knit.

2nd & 6th rows – Knit.

3rd & 5th rows – K1 (0, 4, 2, 1), ★[K2tog] twice,

[yf, K1] 3 times, yf, [SKPO] twice, rep from ★ until 1 (0, 4, 2, 1) sts rem, K1 (0, 4, 2, 1).

4th & 8th rows – Purl.

7th & 9th rows – Knit.

10th row – Purl.

These 10 rows form pattern. Cont in pattern as set until work measures 37 (37, 39, 41, 42) cm, measured from the cast-on edge and ending after a wrong-side (even) row ★★.

Place a marker at both ends of the next row, to indicate the start of armholes and cont in patt until work measures 57 (59, 63, 66, 68) cm, measured from the cast-on edge and ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape shoulders – Keeping patt correct, cast off 5 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at the beg of the next 2 (6, 6, 6, 4) rows, then 6 (0, 0, 0, 11) sts at beg of next 4 (0, 0, 0, 2) rows – 34 (35, 37, 38, 39) sts.

Leave these sts on a st-holder.

FRONT

Work as given for back to ★★. Place a marker at both ends of next row to indicate the start of the armholes and cont in patt until work measures 51 (53, 56, 59, 61) cm, measured from the cast-on edge and ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape left neck – Patt 22 (26, 30, 33, 37), turn and put the rem sts on to a st-holder. Work with these 22 (26, 30, 33, 37) sts.

Cont in patt as set, dec 1 st at neck edge on the next 4 rows. Work one row straight then dec 1 st at neck edge on next row, and every foll alt row until 17 (21, 24, 27, 31) sts rem. Work straight in patt until work measures the same as the back to shoulder, ending after a wrong-side row (right neck end after a right-side row).

Shape shoulder – Working in patt, cast off 5 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at the beg of the next row and foll 0 (2, 2, 2, 1) alt row(s).

Work one row straight (omit this row on right neck), then cast off 6 (0, 0, 0, 11) sts at beg of next and foll 1 (0, 0, 0, 0) alt row(s).

Shape right neck – With right side facing, leave the central 24 (25, 25, 26, 27) sts on st-holder, join yarn at the neck edge and patt to end

– 22 (26, 30, 33, 37) sts. Work to match left neck and shoulder noting bracketed exceptions.

SLEEVES

With 6.5 mm needles, cast on 35 (37, 37, 39, 41) sts. Work in patt as follows, and AT THE SAME TIME, work inc row on 5th row and every foll 6th (4th, 4th, 4th, 4th) row until there are 55 (59, 65, 69, 71) sts, noting that on 3rd & 5th rows, inc sts are knit sts.

Inc row – K1, m1, patt to last st, m1, K1 – (inc of 2 sts).

1st row (right side) – Knit.

2nd & 6th rows – Knit.

3rd & 5th rows – K1 (2, 2, 3, 4), ★[K2tog] twice,

[yf, K1] 3 times, yf, [SKPO] twice, rep from ★ 3 times, K1 (2, 2, 3, 4) sts.

4th & 8th rows – Purl.

7th & 9th rows – Knit.

10th row – Purl.

These 10 rows form pattern. When incs are complete, work straight until sleeve measures 45 (45, 46, 47, 47) cm, measured from the cast-on edge and ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape sleeve cap – Cast off 18 (20, 22, 23, 24) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 19 (19, 21, 23, 23) sts.

Cast off.

TO COMPLETE

Weave in ends and block pieces lightly. Sew left shoulder seam.

Neckline – With 6 mm needles and right side facing, knit across 34 (35, 37, 38, 39) sts from back st-holder, pick up and knit 12 (12, 14, 14, 14) sts across the left front neck, knit 24 (25, 25, 26, 27) sts from front st-holder and finally, pick up and knit 12 (12, 14, 14, 14) sts along right front neck – 82 (84, 90, 92, 94) sts. Work 4 rows in g-st across all these sts.

Cast off.

To Make Up – Sew right shoulder and neckband. Fit sleeve caps into armholes between markers and sew in place. Sew sleeve and side seams. Weave in any loose ends. See ball-band for further care instructio­ns. ■
