The People's Friend

Q: I’ve recently been diagnosed with COPD and I suffer from breathlessness. What can I do to help improve this?

-

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease usually develops due to long-term damage to your lungs from breathing in harmful substances like cigarette smoke, smoke from other sources and air pollution. Jobs where people are exposed to dust, fumes and chemicals also contribute to developing COPD.

Stopping smoking can improve your breathing and stop further damage. Inhalers help breathlessness, but it’s important to use them properly. There are videos online at the Asthma UK website, or ask your nurse, doctor or pharmacist to check your technique.

Ask about pulmonary rehabilitation, too. It’s a programme of exercise and education that includes breathing techniques and positions to help when out of breath.
