QCan you please tell me what a seadragon is? Am I correct in thinking it’s just another name for a seahorse? Mrs L.F., Romford.

ANo. While it does resemble a seahorse, there are actually three different types of seadragon – the leafy, the ruby and weedy sea dragon (also called the common sea dragon). These marine fish are most closely related to the pipefish and they live in the shallow coastal waters of southern and western Australia and Tasmania.

The leafy seadragon has appendages which help it to blend into the seagrass beds and reefs of the habitat it enjoys, and the camouflage helps fool predators.

Just like their relatives, the pipefish and seahorses, it’s the male seadragons that give birth. While seahorses carry the eggs in a pouch, the seadragons hold them under their tail.
