MEGS and JANE BEGBIE are embroiled in SOPHIA JEX-BLAKE’S mission to enrol at Edinburgh University to study medicine. Jane is also trying to start a cookery school with the help of HENRIETTA KENNEDY and her daughter HARRIET. Jane’s friend LUCILLA GRANT is very ill but refuses to be seen by her husband WALTER’S chosen doctor. Sophia upsets the medical community, and Jane’s maid BEATTIE, especially when she visits Lucilla on the suggestion of Lucilla’s son ARTHUR. Arthur is amenable to the ladies’ cause, unlike his father, and puts Sophia in touch with ALEXANDER RUSSEL, editor of “The Scotsman”, who is eager to help. JENNY COWIE, sister of Megs and Jane, and her young daughter AMABEL have arrived for an extended stay in the city. Amabel is an intelligen­t but mischievou­s girl, and attracts the ire of LETTY FAIRWEATHE­R, wife of DOCTOR FAIRWEATHE­R. Their son JEROME is more interested in flirting than studying. As angry letters pile up on her desk, Sophia doggedly works towards her cause . . .
