Renda wants to top city bill with title shot

-

CELLO Renda says he’s ready to win a title on Peterborough’s next big fight night.

More than 1,300 fight fans were at the Exec Arena at the East of England Showground earlier this month to watch the city’s first professional show for more than four years.

And that bumper turn out has convinced promoter Robert Waterman to book another show at the venue on Thursday, June 7.

Waterman hopes Renda will top the bill in a title challenge after he came through this month’s comeback fight.

Renda dominated his four-round fight against slugger Ruslans Pojonisevs and the 26 year-old said: “I felt good in there, comfortable.

“I had been out of the ring for two years and now I’ve got a few rounds under my belt, I’m ready for a title fight next.

“I haven’t worn a belt for a long time.”

Back in September, 2007, Renda won the British Masters middleweight title by blasting out Steve Ede inside two rounds in front of his Southampton fans, then returned home to make a successful defence against Ryan Rawlinson at the Holiday Inn.

He vacated the title and went on to challenge for English honours, reach the final of ‘Prizefighter’ and win a British-title eliminator.

He has the British Masters belt framed in the conservatory of his Newborough home and said: “There’s definitely room on the wall for another belt !”

Renda is planning to box his way to another belt having tweaked the power-punching style that has made him a smash hit with internet fight fans around the world.

“I threw more jabs in my last fight than I have in the rest of my career put together,” he said, “and I must be good at it because my left hand is still sore from hitting him! I’ve shown that I can box when I want to.”

Promoter Waterman has also confirmed that Gunthorpe light-heavyweight Caine Brodie will also box on the show.

Brodie hurt his right hand during his crowd-pleasing points win over Emmanuel Moussinga at the Exec Arena – and promises more thrills on the show in June.

He hopes to squeeze in another fight before his next home-town date and the 29 year-old said: “The crowd pay my wages and I like to think I give them value for money.

“My trainer (Johnny Eames) told me before my last fight not to get involved in a fight. I thought: ‘You must be joking!’ I love getting in there and having a row. I’m told it was the best fight of the night and that’s the most important thing for me.”

Waterman will be putting the bill together in the coming weeks and said: “The Peterborough public have shown they will support professional boxing and if they keep coming along, we will keep putting on shows.”

Tickets are available from 01733882565.

Renda will be running for Sport Relief on Sunday.

He will taking a warm-up session with fund raisers at The Bull pub in Newborough from 10.30am before joining them on the run.
