Cello set to move up after proving he is the Master
Renda wants to bring a major title fight to the city
City puncher Cello Renda is ready to give up his International Masters title to chase bigger prizes.
Renda made a successful first defence of his light- heavyweight crown on home soil when topping an East of England Showground bill.
Renda was ahead on the judges’ scorecards when opponent Tyan Booth was disqualified in the ninth round for ‘ persistent rule- breaking’.
That Saturday success is likely to be Renda’s last outing asMasters champion. He now hopes to challenge for British or European Union gold.
Renda said:“I’ve done what I had to do with the Masters title. I won it and defended it - now it is time to move on.
“It was an honour and a privilege to defend the belt in my home city and I can’t thank the people who have supported me enough.
“We’ll have to wait and see what develops but I would love to fight for a British or European Union title here in the city. I know I could sell out a fight like that.
“The plan was to fight again in April on the next Peterborough bill but I think I’ll have to wait another couple of months due to the cuts I received to my face onSaturday. I’ve got to let them heal properly but I hope to be backin the ring when there is another Peterborough show in June.”
Renda was left raging by the antics of opponent Booth, who he claims continually used his head and elbows before being thrown out.
Renda added: “I’m lucky not to be badly hurt due to what he was doing. I could have lost teeth, broken my nose or had damage to my eye socket from being head butted all night.
“It became clear early in the fight that his game plan was to rough me up. There is no place for that sort of thing.”
Renda has hailed the impact trainer Jon Pegg has had on his career.
Renda added: “I’ve had three fights since I’ve been with Jon. I’ve won the lot and only lost two of the 28 rounds I’ve boxed. He is a terrific guy and I wouldn’t have come through Saturday without him. He was brilliant during training and the fight itself.”
