Derby joy for Lions but Borough beaten

Borough coach Andy Phillips is adamant his side will only have eyes on Newark this weekend.

Saturday’s trip to Notting hamshire is the last Midlands East Division One match before the big city derby between Borough and Peter borough Lions at Fortress (or Fragile if you are a Lions fan) Fengate.

But Phillips is in no doubt which is the more important game.

“Newark are one of the teams around us in the table so it’s a game we need to win,” Phillips insisted.

“The matches against this sort of team are the biggest games left in our season.

“Anything we get against the top teams will be a bonus.

“There has obviously been a lot of chatter about the club concerning the Lions match, but not from the players or the coaching staff as we are focussed entirely on winning this Saturday.

“We beat Newark earlier in the season, but it was a very close match and I expect a similar contest this time.”

Lock forward Sam Crooks came off during last weekend’s 35- 15 defeat at second- placed Old Northamptonians so he will have a late fitness test.

Borough took a shock lead in that match through a Vernon Horne try. Johnny Beale also claimed a late consolation try.

Lions are without a fixture this weekend, but they remained top of the table with a resounding 35- 8 local derby win over Spalding at Bretton Park.

Lions scored five tries through Max Guseinov, Mantaut as Vilimavicus, Chris Humphrey, Saad Sait and Jordan Burgess.

Harry Harrison scored Spalding’s consolation try.

Thorney beat Westwood 21- 13 in a Midlands Division Four East clash.

Brothers Rob and Mark Elsey scored a try each for Thorney after an early score from Tom Deplancke.

Ben Fouracre scored tries in all three of his appearances in a mini- tournament hosted by his Wisbech Under 12 club. He crossed in a 15- 0 win over Boroug handa10- 10 draw with the same opposition as well as ina10- 0 win over another Borough side.

Henry Hoyles, Luke Green and Connor Porter al s o claimed tries for the all- conquering Wisbech team.
