Folding cycle hire hub poised to go on road

A new cycle hire scheme that allows commuters to take the bicycles anywhere in the county is to be launched in Peterborou­gh.

The folding cycle hire scheme is a joint venture costing £ 58,000 between the operators Brompton Dock and East Coast Trains and Peterborou­gh City Council.

The dock will be capable of holding 20 cycles and will be based at Peterborou­gh railway station.

Commuters and visitors to the city can use the scheme so long as they are a registered and paid up member.

The scheme has been funded by the Department of Transport from the sustainabl­e transport fund.

Managing director of Brompton DockMark Ant wiss said: “We are looking forward to seeing Brompton Dock take off in Peterborou­gh.

“It is great to see the scheme go in. It has been especially designed to cater for both the local residents and visitors to the city.

He added: “Located at the station, Brompton Dockisidea­lly situated for visitors coming to Peterborou­gh by train and for those commuting with the bikes to London and elsewhere.”

Councillor Peter Hiller, the-council’s cabinet member for neighbourh­oods, said: “This is a really exciting scheme for Peterborou­gh and something we welcome to the city.

“We want more people to think about using environmen­tally friendly forms of transport such as bikes for their everyday trips and this scheme makes it easy for people to do so.”

East Coast’s stations and property director Tim Hedley- Jones said: “This is a very welcome addition to the cycle facilities weal ready provide at Peterborou­gh.

He said:“It’s the latest partnershi­p we at East Coast are fully supporting to encourage sustainabl­e travel to andfrom our stations.

“The folding bikes can be taken on to our trains and on other public transport and provide a simple affordable and healthy way to travel.”

Members of the scheme can register online at www. bromptondo­ck. co. uk and pay anannual membership fee.

There are two tariffs: frequent, for which members pay a £ 45 annual membership fee and then £ 2,50 per day to hire a bike and leisure status for which members pay a £ 10 annual fee plus £ 5 a day to hire a bike.
