City of Peterborough playercoach Gareth Andrew is backing his young guns to emerge victorious from a ferocious relegation battle in the National East Conference. City toppled third- placed Oxted 3- 2 with a last- gasp goal from Alex Armstrong at Bretton Gate last weekend, but they remain bottom of a table where the last eight of a 10- team league are separated by just four points.

There are just two matches remaining for all teams with City facing Tedding ton at Bretton Gate on Saturday ( 1.30pm) before travelling to Richmond the following weekend.

Andrew said:“It’s been a ridiculous few weeks. We’ve lost just one of our last eight games and yet we’re still bottom.

“But we’ve now proven we can take points off the top three teams so we have no reason to fear the last two games.

“We have a lot of young lads in our team who won’t have experienced this sort of pressure before, but youngsters also tend to be fearless so I’m confident about our chances.

“Teddington will be tough opposition, especially as they are not safe from relegation themselves, but we are a much better team now than when they thrashed us 7- 3 at their place earlier in the season.

“Our objective this weekend is to win the game and make sure we have something to play for in the final game.”

Second- team regular Tom Hagues was the star of the show against Oxted scoring two goals and forcing the short corner that Armstrong converted to win the match two minutes from time.

City led 1- 0, but fell behind 2- 1 early in thesecond- half before fighting back.

Andrew added: “I’d rather we started the game like we finish edit. We were in second gear for too long, but I have to be happy that we showed the fight needed to get back and win the game.

“We will need that sort of spirit in the next fortnight.”

City’s Over 40s team just failed to reach the semi- finals of the National Veterans Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Adam Drake twice gave City the lead against Brooklands at Bretton Gate, but the visitors hit back to level each time and eventually triumphed 3 - 2 in a penalty shootout.
