‘ Come clean’ Border Agency

- Graham Hobbs, Peterborough

I would like to congratulate you in featuring the case of Mahdi Mohammed on the front page of the Peterborough Telegraph ( March 7) The reporting of the case has left me feeling very angry because this man was allowed to remain in this country when a court had been given the impression by Mr Tim Brown that he would be deported. It appears to methat the Border Agency is culpable and someone from this agency made the decision that this man would not be deported. This person or persons who made this decision should be made to give an account of its failure to a Court of Law. Having worked as a social worker for over 25 years, if I had made an error of judgement in such matters, I would have had to face a Public Enquiry. The Border Agency should be made to justify it decision to a Public Enquiry where those responsible should give an account for their decision. The victims of this man’s crime have to live with this abuse for the rest of their lives. Innocent young girls lives have been irreversibly damaged and they are left to cope with the terrible psychological, emotional and physical abuse. It is now becoming apparent that so many victims of this sort of crime have kept quiet because they did not think that they would be believed! Having the courage to come forward after years of suffering still seemsto carry a stigma! There is something radically wrong with a legal and political system that permits this man to remain in this country. Come on, “we need to make the punishment fit the crime.” Or is somebody from the Boarder Agency going to hide behind the legal system and not be brought to account for its error of judgement? We need to take a long hard look at the process of “grooming,” and ensure that the victims are believed and protected.
