Vulnerable hit by council cuts

- TheNetworkTeam Peterborough

We are a group of adults with a learning disability in Peterborough. Peterborough City Council put forward a proposal to cut us out of social care. The Council wants to save money at our expense. The Council voted on March 6th to say that wecannot have the social care we need from them anymore. This means we will not be able to have carers to support us in our own homes. Some of us get support to cook, clean, budget and do all the things we need to do to stay independent and safe in our homes. Wewill not be able to go to our Drop In centre or Day service. We will not be able to have a worker to support us to get out and about safely in the community or give our families a break. This is because the council wants to change the Fair Access to Care rules to say we are not eligible for social care anymore. The Council wants to cut out all people who have “High Moderate “needs like us. The Government says that they value people with a learning disability. The Government says that we have the same right to a fulfilled life as everybody else. But people with a learning disability need support and good services to have the same chances in life as everyone else. Webelieve the council should have a plan to make things better for people with a learning disability, not worse. We think that we are easy targets. We say that it is not fair to save money at our expense. We think the council should stop trying to save money by cutting support to vulnerable people. The Network Team is a group of adults with a learning disability that meets together to speak up about issues that affect people with a learning disability, such as services.
