PETERBOROUGH Sports boss Seamus Morgan has told title rivals Moulton Harrox they are hot favourites for glory after a potentially pivotal day in the Peterborough Premier Division.

Morgan arrived at that conclusion following a shock hammering for his table- topping side and a crucial 2- 0 win for third- placed Harrox at secon- placed Netherton.

Sports saw a 14 - match winning run unceremoniously ended by Leverington who won 5- 1 after a second - half collapse after the sides had reached the interval at 1- 1.

Sports remain seven points clear of Netherton ( who have four games in hand) while third- placed Moulton have - closed to within nine points of the summit still armed with six matches in hand.

“Saturday was a day full of surprises for me,” said Morgan. “I had a surprise 40th birthday party at night which was considerably more enjoyable than the nasty surprise we got in the afternoon.

“I never saw a performance or result like that coming.

“Playing simple football has been the secret to our success of late and we didn’t do that on Saturday. We tried to over- complicate things and it cost us dear.

“The ball is very much in Moulton Harrox’s court now.

“They still have a lot of games to play, but they seem to be finding a way to win regularly.

“To be brutally honest, they will win the league from this position if they are good enough.”

Denny Escorcio scored twice during a dream Leverington debut after arriving from city- based non- league club Northern Star.

Nathan Watson also bagged a brace with Gav Hill getting the other goal as Leverington bounced back impressively from their PFA Senior Cup semi- final heartbreak the week before.

It was a stunning success for the Fenmen and their boss Stuart Webb is hoping it won’t be a one- off.

Webb said: “We seem to be able to pull off one great, unexpected win every season.

“Last season we won 5- 2 at Moulton Harrox which came as a surprise to us, but we are determined to build on this win and finish as high as we possibly can.

“We could even have won by a bigger margin.

“We were1- 0 up when Denny lobbed the ‘ keeper and the ball appeared to bounce a yard over the line before it was cleared.

“Of course they went straight down the other end and scored so we thought it might turn out to be one of those days.

“But fair play to the lads for forgetting the cup defeat and playing so well.

“Denny’s signing has given us all a huge lift as he will be a class act at this level.”

Leverington’s win moved them into 12th place in the Premier Division table, four points off a top- half spot.
