On Monday East Timor national Antonio Conceitao (33) appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court charged with the attempted murder of Mr Dos Santos, and possession of a bladed article in public.

The court heard it is alleged he was carrying two kitchen knives in the street.

Conceitao, of Cobden Avenue, spoke through an Indo- nesian interpreter.

His f a c e was heavil y bruised, with some wounds and with dressing on cuts above his eyes.

A police spokesman said he had suffered a serious head injury prior to his arrest.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Members of his family sobbed in the public gallery as he was bought into the dock.

District Judge Ken Sheraton remanded Conceitao into custody until Friday, when he will appear at Cambridge Crown Court for a short preliminary hearing.

On Friday there was shock on Cobden Avenue following the incident.

Part of the street near the junction with Lincoln Road was cordoned off for a number of hours while scenes of crimes officers worked to gather evidence.

Resident Moin Khan said: “The emergency services did a very good job.

“It is very unusual to see something like this on this street. It is shocking as it is a quiet area.” A man who chased after and tackled two armed burglars after they burst into his home has been commended for his bravery.

Andrejs Hincenbergs, ( 27) who was carrying a knife, and Agnes Koskins, (26), armed with a snooker cue, broke into a flat above Best Kebabs in Nene Quay, Wisbech, at about 9.45pm on October 16, startling the occupant, a 33-year-old woman and her two young children.

They ran off but the woman’s 45-year-old husband gave chase, detaining the two men.

Hincenbergs and Koskins, both of Opportune Road, Wisbech, admitted aggravated burglary. Hincenbergs also admitted possessing an offensive weapon. Both were jailed for six years. The victim was awarded £750 for his bravery.
