Valuation event to help appeal

-

Residents can get their antiques valued and raise money for a new hospice.

Antiques Roadshow expert George Archdale will be taking part in a valuation day for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Appeal at the Red Lion in Warmington, near Oundle on September 20.

George will be working alongside Lady Victoria Leatham, a fellow Antiques Roadshow regular, hoping to unearth some hidden treasures at the Antiques Valuation Day.

And he found his first in the home of Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson.

Mr Jackson said: “The table was the first piece of furniture Sarah and I bought together, just after we married.

“We spotted it in a junk shop going cheap because it was missing two chairs – it only has six instead of eight.

He added: “I think we got the owner down to about £100 but we had to clean it up and get it home ourselves.

“I liked its sturdy shape and, in the past few years, we have had some lovely meals with great friends sat around it.”

George i mmediately identified the table as having been made in the late 1920s or early 1930s out of walnut wood with a mirror top.

George said: “I’d value the table at around £800 so Stewart has made a decent return on his money.

“It’s a fascinating story. I really hope everyone takes time to look in their attics or bring that old painting off the wall to be valued on the Antiques Valuation Day – there’s always a story to be told.”

George and other experts from auctioneers Cheffins will be on hand from 11am until 4pm.

Visitors are invited to bring one item for valuation with the entry fee of £15.

All the money raised on the day will help boost the £6 million Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal, funding the building of a new hospice at Thorpe Hall in Peterborough to serve the region for generations to come.
