Flowers, music and some fun

-

The picturesque village of Glapthorn, near Oundle, is holding a Bank Holiday weekend event, all in aid of its medieval church, St Leonard’s, which will be decked out for the occasion with colourful flowers.

Plans include a concert in the church on Saturday evening, a fete on Sunday afternoon, a choral evensong that evening, open gardens on Monday afternoon, as well as scarecrows around the village all weekend.

On Saturday evening in the church at 7.30, there will be an evening of light- hearted music provided by Barnwell Purely for Pleasure choir and Ruth Palmer, while a fete is to be held in the garden of Church Cottage in Main Street, on Sunday afternoon from 2pm until 5pm. Amongst the attractions are a variety of stalls as well as pony rides for children.

On Monday afternoon, eight private gardens will be open to visitors while homemade teas will be served in the Village Hall on both afternoons.

The stone church has stood in the village for over 800 years, and has some fine medieval wall paintings. It has benefited recently from improvements to its facilities, with the installation of a disabled toilet and kitchen servery, mainly funded by Waste Recycling Environment Trust (WREN) as well as a number of other charitable trusts. All proceeds from the weekend’s activities will go towards the maintenance of the church fabric.
