Peterborough Milton have got a roaring Rory of their own

Edwards rules in club championship

There’s more than one Rory having a great time on the golf course in 2014. While Rory McIlroy is ruling the fairways and greens on both sides of the Atlantic, Rory Edwards is having a sizzling summer much closer to home.

King Edwards reigned supreme at Peterborough Milton on Sunday, producing some sparkling golf at the Castor club to complete a club championship double.

The two-handicapper produced excellent rounds of 72 and 73 to win both the gross and net sections of the club’s premier 36-hole tournament.

He lifted the Bruce Cup for the best gross total of 145 - a shot clear of Tom Burgh and Chris White - and also took the Craig Cup for the best net return of 141. Again he won by a shot, this time from eighthandicapper Gary White.

It is only the second time anyone has completed the club championship double since the competition began back in 1937.

The only other member to have achiebed the feat was Brian West back in 1981.

Young Thalia Martin (16) won the ladies club championship. She had a 36-hole total of 163 and beat last year’s winner Ros Cuthbert by four shots to win the Claret Jug.

The best net return for the Gemini Cup came from Angela Boxall (142). EAST PGA CIRCUIT Stuart Brown came within a whisker of victory in the latest tournament on the East PGA circuit.

The Orton Meadows professional finished third in the Links Golf Club Pro-Am at Newmarket with a three under-par 69 and only a dropped shot at the 17th hole cost him a share of the first prize.

Jonathan Starkey from the host club and Jason Levermore from the Channel Golf Club both shot 68s and pocketed £705 apiece. Brown earned £480.

Aftre dropping shots at the second and third, Brown produced a birdie blitz, gaining shots at the fifth, eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th and 14th before that costly blip at the 17th. WOMEN’S PGA CIRCUIT Thorpe Wood professional Suzanne Dickens completed her best season on the Women’s PGA circuit last week when the WPGA One Day Series concluded.

The Peterborough player had already sealed her place at the top of the WPGA Order of Merit before the final event of seven at Forest Pines.

But she arrived as newlycrowned WPGA Professional Championship winner after taking the title at Blairgowrie Golf Club just five days earlier.

She produced a four over par round of 78 to finish joint sixth at Forest Pines but her consistent play during the season, including victory at Kedleston Park in June, ensured she finished well ahead of her nearest challenger Joanne Hodge of Hamptworth Golf & Country Club.

Dickens said she was committed to playing every round of the One Day Series again next year and hopes that it will become more popular.

“I’d love to see this series grow. It’d be great to see it extended to something like 20 rounds. I will play it again next year, that’s already an aim.”

Dickens could not hide her joy at what had been a huge week.

“To win at Blairgowrie and top the Order of Merit has just left me feeling over the moon,” she added. “I’m so delighted.”

Dickens has had injury problems in the past.

And even this year she suffered from concussion after a fall in her hotel shower at the Italian Open - and she had a bout of food poisoning after playing in the Czech Republic.

“I’m already looking to next season and I want to get back in the gym to work on my fitness this winter,” she said. “But I also want to work on my putting.” Event 7 at Forest Pines Golf Club 1 74 Megan Clarke 2 75 Sian James 2 75 Keely Chiericato 4 76 Joanne Hodge 5 77 Laura Harvey 6 78 Suzanne Dickens 6 78 Kimberley Crooks 6 78 Alison Nicholas 6 78 Aimee Wilson England Golf Machynys Manston Hamptworth
