Posh go so close to a perfect start to the season

Posh managed to turn a potentially great start to the League One season into a merely satisfactory one after following an excellent win over MK Dons at London Road with a disappointing defeat at home to Sheffield United. Posh boss Darren Ferguson feels his side should still be unbeaten, but he was left to rue the return of one of last season’s failings, namely the inability to take points from matches that don’t pan out perfectly.

Posh l ost 1 8 t i mes i n League One last season which was eight more than any other team that finished in the top six.

‘The Blades claimed a 2-1 victory with a goal five minutes from time to move Posh down to fifth in the League One table after three matches.

“I have always said that if you can’t win a game, then make sure you don’t lose it,” Ferguson stated.

“And this (the Sheffield United match) was one of those occasions.

“We should have had the game won in the first-half as we played some outstanding football.

“We weren’t so good in the second-half, but we still missed a couple of great chances to get in front. If we had taken the lead I think it would have been very hard to stop us.

“It was a poor winning goal from our point of view as well. You can’t concede to a long throw, a flick on and a shot. That’s far too easy.

“Losing games when we should have picked up something hurt us badly last season and it’s a habit we have to break if we are to compete this season. It’s a shame as we should have had at least seven points from out first three games and that would have been a great start consider- ing the problems we have and the opposition we have faced.”

Posh did overcome a lengthening injury crisis as well as arch-rivals MK Dons at the weekend.

Two goals from substitute Kyle Vassell and a first senior goal of Spurs loanee Kenny McEvoy’s career saw Posh to a 3-2 win.

“I saw some things on the pitch (against MK Dons) that make me excited for the future,” Ferguson admitted.

“Conor Washington didn’t score, but his brilliance was the catalyst for the win and Jon Taylor is a certainty to become a firm fans’ favourite.

“And Jermaine Anderson was not far behind Dons’ Dele Alli today and he’s a player who is thought to be worth millions.

“I changed things around a bit tactically and luckily it came off for us.

“We played some good stuff against a good side and thoroughly deserved our win.

“It’s early days, but the signs are encouraging.”
