Ripping the heart out of a community club
Callous thieves have ripped out a generator at Thorney Rugby Club leaving it powerless. I doubt the thieves stopped for one minute to consider the effect of their actions. The impact it has on a club that exists to do good for the community and its players. They will not have given a moment’s thought to all the work that goes in to a club like Thorney to make it survive and flourish. The countless hours of volunteers’ time, the fundraising, the support of local businesses are all poured into sports clubs like this one in communities all over the region. It’s an act of theft and vandalism that is even more sickening because of the impact it has on those volunteers and the players of all ages. When they catch the culprits they should make them make amends at the club and put right the damage in front of the victims. Perhaps when they look their victims in the eye they will take a different view of their callous actions. Council leader Marco Cereste and other councillors were invited on a cycle ride by a campaigning rider. The vexed question of cycling in Bridge Street and the challenges faced by cyclists in some parts of the city were seen first hand. Peterborough has some fantastic cycleways - they are a huge asset and part of the city’s green credentials. But to ensure they are used to their full effect and to make the city greener it must also be more cycle friendly. Councillors often get criticised but they have to take credit for seeing first hand the issues before deciding how to tackle them.
