City first teams will both try and beat the best in the East
Hockey - Favourable English Hockey Cup draw
It couldn’t be any tougher for City of Peterborough’s men and ladies teams this weekend. Both are away to East League leaders on Saturday (November 7). The men travel to current Premier A Division top dogs St Albans, while the ladies are at Division One North pacesetters Saffron Walden.
At least both teams will travel in good spirits. City’s men are three matches unbeaten after a battling 1-1 home draw against Cambridge City seconds last Saturday.
And the ladies are chasing a fourth win in five matches after despatching Blueharts 3-2 at Bretton Gate last time out.
City men’s manager Graham Finding said: “St Albans have a 100 per cent home record so a victory will ne a tough ask. They’ve scored 10 goals in their last two games so they’ve really hit their stride.
“They have a coaching team that includes GB mens manager Andy Halliday and a playing squad that includes players vastly experienced at a higher level.
“But we are playing well. We are unbeaten in our last three games and last season we drew both games with St Albans including a crucial match towards the end when they were top of the table and chasing promotion. They eventually finished fourth.”
Ross Ambler shot City in front in the first-half against Cambridge after Aussie Robbie Muir’s unselfish play left him with a far post tap-in.
But Cambridge battled back to earn a point 15 minutes from time following a short corner that might have been incorrectly awarded.
City’s scheduled English Hockey Cup tie with Norwich City at Bretton Gate last Sun- day was conceded by the Norfolk-based club.
And City now have a great chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the elite competition. They have been handed a home draw against Southern Premier League side Henley.
Henley, who knocked National League side Southgate out at the weekend, are eighth in their division whereas as City are fourth.
City are also unbeaten at home so will fancy a win in a match scheduled for Sunday, November 15.
City of Peterborough Ladies striker Tierney August i ne’s remarkable run of scoring in every Division One North game continued in a 3-2 win over Blueharts. The sixteen year-old now has 10 goals in seven matches.
Robyn Gribble and Jen Duffy also scored in a game that was more comfortable for City than the final scorelines suggested.
Saffron Walden Ladies warmed up for this weekend’s clash with a 4-1 win at Spalding. Last season’s Division Two North West champions - they pipped City of Peterborough to the title - have just two points from their seven matches. Ellie Pybus scored their goal againt Walden.
Bourne Deeping remain unbeaten in Division Three North West after a 10-0 win over Newmarket seconds. Jan Havemann scored four.
City of Peterborough men’s seconds suffered a shock battering at Wisbech in the Premier B Division.
They were smacked 9-3 by a side who had won just once before last weekend. Scott Welcher scored four goals for Wisbech.
City host third- placed Norwich City this Saturday (2.30pm).
Spalding are still going well in the Premier B Division. They are second after winning six of their seven matches, the latest a 4-2 success at rock bottom Long Sutton when Josh Rowbottom scored twice.
Spalding seconds thrashed 10-man Ely 9-0 in Division Four North West with nine different players getting on the scoresheet.
City of Peterborough eighths stretched their perfect winning record to seven matches in Division Six North West with a 3-0 success at Ely thirds.
Jacob Hings (2) and Harry Crane were the City scorers.
