Goal-crazy Sports add a Moat to their defence

Peterborou­gh Sports hit the national headlines last weekend when their 12-2 win at Kirby Muxloe in the United Counties Premier Division was revealed to be the biggest Step Five victory in the UK.

And don’t bet against another goal flurry from the city’s most successful team on Saturday when they host Eastern Counties Premier Division side Swaffhamin­the first round of the FA Vase.

S p o r t s h ave a l r e a d y knocked the leaders of that division, Mildenhall, out of the competitio­n. Swaffham arenexttob­ottomhavin­gwon just one of 13 league matches.

“I’m j ust i nterested i n winning,” Sports boss Jimmy Dean said. “The margin doesn’t bother me.”

Dean’s refusal to rest on his laurels is a driving force for Sports’ success. His team moved five points clear at the top of the UCL with a 2-0 win over Holbeachat­PSLonTuesd­ay - a ninth clean sheet of the season - but the following day he signed highly-rated Whittlesey Athletic goalkeeper Lewis Moat.

Jones brothers Richard and Mark scored against Holbeach. Mark Jones scored twice at Kirby Muxloe, but he was overshadow­ed by fivegoal Avelino Vieira and fourgoal Josh Moreman.

Holbeach (away to Coventry Copsewood), Peterborou­gh Northern Star (home to SunSports) andYaxley (home to Stanway) are also in Vaseaction this Saturday.

Yaxley knocked Star out of the Hinchingbr­ooke Cup on Tuesday6-5 onpenaltie­s after a 3-3 draw at In2uitive Park.
