Fiesta’s 40th is a fireworks bonanza

-

On bonfire night around 3,500 cars poured into the East of England Showground. They were carrying over 11,000 people eagerly anticipating what we believe to be the largest and most spectacular firework display in East Anglia. It was the 40th year in the history of this event. Yet again Peterborough and Minster Rotary Clubs worked alongside Peterborough Round Table to make it all happen. Titanium Fireworks (the team who did the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and New Year in London) created the magnificent 20 minute display.

Those who came were in for a treat - many visitors said they thought the wind made the fireworks look even more spectacular than ever. Unfortunately it was the same wind that made the organisers reluctantly take the decision not to light the bonfire - apologies to those who were disappointed.

Apart from the sheer pleasure experienced by those who come to this non-profit making event each year it is worth remembering that, over the years, approximately £600,000 has been raised to support local good causes. Funds raised each year are shared between the organising clubs, and those who assist on the day. They subsequently donate the money to deserving recipients of their choice.

We should acknowledge the Scout Leaders, Lions, Rotary Clubs, Round Table, people from the US Army, friends and family who gave up their time on a cold night to marshal car parks and firework display areas. They ensure everything happens with military precision and make sure all who attend can enjoy the event without mishap.

Eric Dickens, chairman of the Firework Fiesta organising committee, said: “Once again Firework Fiesta was a fantastic success. In order to maintain our 40-year reputation of a safe event, we could not light the bonfire because of the strength and direction of the wind. Sparks easily could have set fire to trees and buildings. At least it stayed dry! Visitors have told us the additional exit improved traffic flow. Despite the large number of people attending most cars were out in 40 minutes, half the time of previous years. We aim to improve the event each year and hope to see you at our next amazing value for money event on 4 November 2017.”

Each year, in addition to the thrilling main event there is always high quality entertainment on stage, provided by Heart Radio, a funfair and food outlets. Why not come early and/or leave later, thus avoiding the traffic, and enjoy these additional attractions at leisure. See you there.
