Road closed after fatal collision between car and lorry
An elderly couple from Spalding died when their car was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry on a Fenland road. The crash happened on the A16 at Crowland, near Cowbit at about 4.40am on Monday.
Thecouple - a womanaged in her 70s and a man aged 69 , who have not been named by police- were in a silver Peugeot 206whichcollided with the lorry on the rural road.
A police spokesman said both of the victims were from Spalding.
There were long delays for traffic on the road, which links PeterboroughandCrowland, while emergency services worked at the scene, and debris was cleared away. The road wasfinally able to bereopened by officers at 3.30pm.
It is not the first fatal accident on the road to have occurred in recent years. In May 2015, a woman died in a collision. And in 2014, a mo- torcyclist died in a collision involving his bike, a car and a lorry on the stretch of road.
Cllr Jim Astill, District Councillor for Crowland and Deeping St Nicholas Ward, said hewouldlike to see speed cameras introduced on the stretch of road.
Hesaid:“It wouldbewrong of metocommentonthelatest incident without knowingthe full facts about it. All I can do on that note is offer my sympathies to thefamilies of those who lost their life.
“As for average speed cameras, this incident occurred outside of the location covered by them. But as a regu- lar user of the road between CrowlandandCowbitIcansay that the cameras have significantly reduced speeds since going live, there also appears to have been a reduction in the number of overtakes. Unfortunately thecamerasalone don’t address the safety concerns with the twomainjunctions at Crowland.”
The f i l e has now been passed over to the Lincolnshire coroner, and an inquest is expected to open soon.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Lincolnshire police on 101, quoting incident number 30 of February 13.
