Yobs threaten bowls club future

-

I’m unless Counciljewel writingin the action Peterboroughtakes crownto inform immediate Peterborough’sis in you serious Citythat significant danger of going to rack and ruin.

Teenagers (and others) are simply running around Central Park, walking, cycling and picnicking across the bowls greens ruining the surfaces, while the park wardens simply turn a blind eye to this sort of behaviour.

Events reached a head last night during a bowls league game when teenagers brazenly walked and cycled across our bowls green while we were actually playing, totally disrupting the match.

Both our own members and the visiting team were completely shocked by this anti-social behaviour which continued even when we talked to them to persuade them to stop.

This year we have recruited several new members who were enjoying bowls - now this work looks wasted.

Our bowls club not only gives members the opportunity to play the game, but also contributes to a healthy life- style, while providing a social focus for many people.

We are now left in a position where many members are refusing to play in the park due to this intimidating behaviour while other clubs will simply not come down to compete against us – effectively destroying our club.

This situation has been brewing for several months now as the promised fencing to protect the bowling greens, which should have gone up before the season began, has been delayed several times, combined with the lack of overall people management.

Unless action is taken now by the council our bowls club will fold and the park, which has been enjoyed by so many for several generations, will become a virtual no go area.

We have contacted local councillors who have promised us action will be taken, but cutbacks in recent years have left the park looking distinctly unloved. We await the council’s response.
