Glass suddenly shatters at entrance to Queensgate
Investigation after large pane falls to the ground
A large pane of glass suddenly shattered from above Queensgate Shopping Centre’s Long Causeway entrance before falling to the ground. Fortunately nobody is believed to have been seriously hurt, but a huge gap was left above the centre’s entrance which was filled by a large block of wood.
A cordon was also seen by an onlooker to have been put up around the entrance while the glass was cleared.
A spokesperson for Queensgate Shopping Centre said: “We can confirm that a panel of glass shattered A wood block filling in for the broken glass above the entrance to Queensgate Shopping Centre above the entrance leading into Queensgate Shopping Centre from Long Causeway at approximately 3.50pm on Wednesday, July 5.
“No one was injured and the area was made safe and secure immediately.”
Queensgate began an immediate investigation into what happened, and the spokesperson said the area is deemed to be safe for shoppers.
He added: “An independent company is currently conducting an investigation into the broken panel of glass which will determine the cause of the sudden breakage.
“The glass panels are made of toughened safety glass and are designed to shatter into small particles when broken, which is what happened on July 5.
“To date, building control and environmental health officers have visited the site and declared the area safe, and once the investigation is complete we will release these findings.” Queensgate was asked if the Health and Safety Executive had been notified but no response was given.
