The painstaking efforts detectives went to in order to catch a killer have been revealed for the first time. Peterborough man Michael Danaher (50) was jailed for 34 years after being convicted of stabbing Oxford book dealer Adrian Greenwood in April last year, and stealing a valuable copy of The Wind in the Willows.

On Monday, a documentary was broadcast on Channel 4 shedding light on the lengths detectives went to in order to bring Danaher to justice.

In the documentary, detectives revealed how they had combed hours of CCTV footage from hundreds of cameras to link Danaher’s car to the crime scene - before retracing his steps back to the flat in Hadrian’s Court, Fletton where they not only found the £50,000 copy of the book, but Danaher (left) and his victim Adrian Greenwood also the murder weapon.

Detectives were also able to paint a shocking picture of Danaher, a father-of-two, who separated from his wife and two sons and whose life has fallen apart.

Danaher’s ex-wife Elaine was also interviewed in the documentary. the pair met while they were both working at John Lewis in Peterborough, and she said: “When you marry someone you think you know them. It’s like he’s got two personalities and this one I’d never ever seen.”

Danaher’s son, Ryan explained how he spoke to his father soon after the killing and visited his dad’s flat and was shown the book.

In the film Ryan said his dad had told him the reason Danaher had cuts on his hands and face was because he had been attacked in Essex (although he had not been to the county) and they were defensive wounds.

At the end of the documentary, Ryan says he will always love his dad - but he could ‘never imagine’ a situation where his dad could commit the murder.
