School and road shut by gas leaks
Two separate incidents cause disruption in the city
Two gas leaks in Peterborough caused a school to be shut and traffic chaos in the south of the city.
There were two unconnected leaks reported to the emergency services yesterday.
The first was reported at Gunthorpe Road yesterday morning.
Engineers were called to deal with the leak, but Norwood Primary School, located on the street, had to be closed for the day.
A Peterborough City Council spokesman said the school was expected to re-open for lessons today (Thursday).
Emergency services were also called to Flaxley Road, near the Amazon Distribution Centre in Fletton at about 12.50pm yesterday.
Cambridgeshire police said they had been called following reports of the gas leak.
Along with police, a large number of fire engines were called to make sure the scene was safe.
Flaxley Road was closed to allow engineers to work at the scene - however the Amazon warehouse itself was not affected by the leak.
The road closure caused long traffic jams in the area for much of the afternoon, especially on the A605.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said the road was able to be re-opened shortly after 3.15pm - however, it took time for traffic flow to return to normal.
The cause of the gas leaks has not been revealed.
