Helping young fulfil their potential

-

Rotary does everything possible to help young people achieve their full potential. Below are several great examples of Rotary in action. Members of Peterborough Rotary club recently organised a series of practice job interviews for students in Year 11 at Kings School.

The event was held over four evenings at the premises of Fisherprint, kindly donated by directors of the company for Rotary to use.

The interviews were conducted by members of the Rotary club and leading volunteers from local industry and commerce, together with the medical and legal professions.

All kindly donated their time and expertise free of charge. Interviews covered a wide range of job applications for careers as diverse as industry, medicine, science, educa- tion, media, sport and many more.

Approximately 150 students were interviewed for an average of 30 minutes followed by a summary dis- cussion with each student to ensure all goals had been achieved. A great experience for all participating.

Ramsey Rotary were delighted when Michael Hal- ford, Kayleigh Morris and Katie Walton gave an account of their summer adventures. All three had been sponsored for Rotary activites both near and far.

Michael attended RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) at Grafham Water, a one week challenging residential course. It included water sports and expeditions with overnight hiking and camping. Other activities included rock climbing, learning to work together to accomplish a task, business planning, leadership and other skills. Michael thanked the club for this rewarding opportunity.

Kayleigh made a long and eventful journey to San Diego on the Pacific coast of America. Having missed her flight she managed to get onto the next where she talked herself into being upgraded to Business Class! Kayleigh joined a Rotary youth camp with other young persons from around the world. Being a coastal city water sports were a major activity.

During a kayaking activity Kayleigh capsized and found herself swimming with a shoal of dolphins - an unforgettable experience. Beach lifegaurds came to her rescue when she was stung by a stingray while swimming, Kayleigh has a scar to remind her!

Katie flew to Hamburg then travelled to a small village on the Baltic Sea, the base for her camp.

Her group was made up of many nationalities, but all spoke good English. Water sport was again the order of the day for Katie with sailing in many types and sizes of boat.

The highlight of her trip was sailing out into the Baltic Sea, staying and working on a large sailing boat for three days and nights.

Katie made everyone smile when she said they were fed German sausages every day at the camp!

All three stay in touch via social media with friends they made during their visits.
