Gill has the look of another Chatteris champion after 18th straight win

Boxing - Derby delight for Jordan

Chatteris has already produced two British boxing champions - lightweight Eric Boon in 1938 and light-welterweight Dave ‘Boy’ Green in 1976 - and the chances are a third will come along soon.

Jordan ‘The Thrill’ Gill, a 23 year-old featherweight from the fenland town, extended his unbeaten record as a professional to 18 bouts at the weekend and fights next for a title.

That will be for the English featherweight crown against champion Samir Mouneimne from Hull and if, as most fistic scribes predict, he does well in that challenge a British title shot will quickly follow.

Gill’s latest win was a comfortable points victory against tough Nicaraguan Rafael Castillo on Friday night in Derby.

Gill dominated all six rounds and twice had his opponent down on the canvas.

But to Castillo’s credit he never gave up and kept gamely ploughing forward despite soaking up a barrage of Gill’s biggest blows.

Gill said: “I’ve hit him with some very hard and very clean shots but he kept getting up and kept coming. He was there until the last bell and I take my hat off to him. He’s one of the toughest men I’ve ever been in with.

“He had a lot of ambition and was very experienced.

“It’s a good six rounds in the bank and I’ve now got some very sore hands!’’

Gill has been promised a shot at Mouneimne for the English title before the end of January 2018.

“I think I’ll beat him. I’ll stop him inside the distance. I’m very confident as always,” said Gill.
