Sports leap forward, but Stamford are better

-

Peterborough Sports moved up six places in Division One South of the Evo Stik League after picking up a much-needed 5-1 win over bottom club Romulus at PSL last weekend.

Central defender Josh Sanders scored twice with Dan Banister, Mark Jones and David Cobb also on target.

Sports are up to 13th ahead of a trip to next-to-bottom Gresley on Saturday.

Jimmy Dean’s battlers couldn’t secure a follow-up win in the Evo Stik League Cup competition on Tuesday when they travelled to in-form Stamford AFC.

A late goal from Pearson Mwonyongo proved the difference between the sides as the Daniels, who handed a debut to former Posh player Lee Clarke, stretched their unbeaten record in all competitiosn to eight matches and maintained their season-long unbeaten record at the Zeeco Stadium.

“It’s another clean sheet and we have great momentum now,” Stamford boss Graham Drury stated.

Stamford are up to fifth in the table after winning their Division One South match 3-0 against Lincoln United last weekend. Mwanyongo scored twice in that game.

The Daniels have a tough game at fourth-placed Frickley on Saturday.

Clarke scored for Blackstones in a 2-1 United Counties Division One defeat at Raunds last weekend.

Spalding United lost to Gresley 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Evo Stik League Cup. The Tulips, who beat Sheffield FC 3-0 in their last league game thanks to a Jamie Jackson hat-trick, will fancy their chances at Romulus on Saturday.
