Explorer Backpacks put to the test in the cathedral

-

ACTIVITY Peterborough Cathedral has launched free Explorer Backpacks for its youngest visitors. The child-sized red backpacks are designed with children aged 7 and under in mind, and include all the tools needed to explore the cathedral in detail. There is a magnifying glass for close-up viewing, a tape measure for sizing up columns, a pair of binoculars to examine the ceilings and a set of coloured paddles to look through and see the world as if through a stained glass window. The pack also comes with a mini teddy bear called Benedict, a torch for peering into dark corners, and an activity trail suggesting things to find.

Alex Carton, the cathedral’s Schools and Learning Officer, said: “We hope that the Explorer Backpacks and the new activity guide will inspire families to bring their children to this amazing building knowing that they will have a great experience.” Jaymee Heaton, who came to trial the new backpacks with her three boys and their dad before the launch, said: “The boys loved it and we think the new Explorer Backpacks will be a hit.”

The backpacks are available all year round during Cathedral visiting hours, which are usually 9.00am until 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 12.00 noon until 3.00pm on Sundays. For more contact the cathedral on 01733 355307.
