IF we needed another reminder of unrest in the world – and the troubled political landscape in America in particular – here’s an explosive action film about civil war breaking out in New York. It’s also another shot across the bows of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson from new boy action-hulk Dave Bautista, the former wrestler who’s been in blockbusters Spectre, Guardians of the Galaxy and Blade Runner 2049. Big brawny Bautista gives a good account as ex-Marine Stupe, a janitor who lives in a basement shelter when all hell breaks loose in the city with battalions of heavily armed rebels from Southern states determined to break away from the union. Luckily for grad student Lucy (Brittany Snow - pictured), who finds the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bushwick turned into a war zone, she bumps into Stupe who takes her under his capable and obviously highly-trained wing, when she explains she saw her boyfriend killed outside an abandoned subway station. Any heavy politics are soon forgotten when it turns into a street by street battle for survival against armed-to-the-teeth militia and crazed looters. It’s only five blocks to the home of Lucy’s grandmother – but can the pair make it? The action is powerful and visceral.Bautista fills the screen, while Snow is one to watch. Name another film about a city under siege. Entries to Alex Gordon, Bushwick competition by November 2.
