Charity to host Christmas dinner for needy Peterborough residents
A new food bank to help needy and vulnerable people in Peterborough is opening throughout December.
The food bank will be operated by charity Unite 4 Humanity, and staff are urging Peterborough residents to help out and donate items to the cause.
The bank is being run from the charity’s shop in Broadway, and Shezad Yousaf, trustee for the cause, said: “Since 2015 we have been running an event on Sundays to help homeless people near the Brewery Tap.
“We have had a number of items donates to us, so we decided to do something.
“We know that there are people out there who can’t even afford a basic can of beans. There has been a rise in the number of people depending on food banks in recent times.
“We wanted to do something to ensure everyone can have a decent meal on their plate.
“At the moment we are planning on running it through December, but if it works and people need us we might extend it throughout the year.”
The charity, which along with helping people in Peterborough has carried out charity work in Bangladesh and other countries, is also putting on a Christmas dinner for needy people in the city. The meal will be held on December 17.
Shezad said: “We would encourage people to donate nonperishable food items such as tinned food to the campaign.
“Anyone interested in helping, or who wants more information, should come and visit us in the shop”
