Sam tucks into a top prize at the UK Coaching dinner
A former Peterborough City Rowing Club member has won a prestigious coaching award.
Sam Tuck (24) picked up the Heather Crouch Young Coach of the Year prize at the 2017 UK Coaching Awards dinner in London last week.
The former Jack Hunt School pupil is head coach of the University of Surrey Boat Club (USBC) where he works on the development of over 40 athletes.
And his crews have achieved great success on the water, winning at the Metropolitan Regatta as well as qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta and being voted Surrey’s most successful club in non-BUCS events.
Tuck also turned down a pay rise, instead investing the money into maintenance and equipment for the club.
Mark Gannon, CEO of UK Coaching, said: “As a nation, we take great pride in rowing. The work that Samuel has done to help develop the club in Surrey is remarkable – waiving his right to a pay rise and instead investing the money in the club and leading crews to the latter stages of prestigious regattas.
“We are delighted to have been able to recognise his fantastic and selfless work.”
Other award winners included Malcolm Brown, triathlon coach of the allconquering Brownlee brothers, David Unsworth (Talent Development at Everton) and Marcellus Baz, who won the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero last year for his work in boxing.
A couple of days later Tuck achieved another fine result when competing for Molesey Boat Club in the London Scullers Head on the Thames.
He won the senior lightweight single sculls in a time of 19.09.
The London Scullers Head is the country’s top event for single scullers with 520 racing over the Boat Race course from Putney to Mortlake.
