Cambridge University expect to make it hard work for City
Hockey - Seven goals for star lady
City of Peterborough will be wary of complacency when they meet Cambridge University for the third time this season on Saturday.
City have beaten the students twice away from home already - they won a tough clash 3-2 in a national cup match last Sunday - and this time the fixture is scheduled for Bretton Gate (11.30am), where the home side have a formidable record.
It’s a must-win East Premier A Division match for unbeaten City who haven’t played a league game on the last two weekends. They’ve slipped to fourth and have seven points to make up on leaders St Albans, albeit with two games in hand.
“University were much stronger last weekend than when we beat them in the league in September,” City manager Graham Finding said. “Promotion is our main aim though so we won’t be taking anything for granted on Saturday.”
City were 1-0 and 2-1 down at the University on Sunday, but improved their performance in the second-half to seal a third round place.
Ben Read (2) and Joe Finding scored the goals with ‘keeper Cameron Goodey excelling late on when the students fought hard for an equaliser.
There was rare disappointment for City of Peterborough Ladies who went down for just the third time in the East Premier Division last weekend, 1-0 at Canterbury seconds.
City were sluggish, particularly in the first half when goalkeeper Holly Riches played well, while a secondhalf rally petered out after player-of-the-match Emma Faux struck a post.
City are still firmly established in third ahead of their final match before the Christmas break, away to Cambridge University on Saturday.
City of Peterborough Ladies seconds are up to second in Division Two North West after a 3-1 win over Alford.
City of Peterborough fourths are third in Division Four North West after a 12-0 thrashing of Woodhall Spa. Ed Whybrow scored a magnificent seven goals with Miriam Wood (2), Abbie Carter, Liz Dakin and Katie Rowe also on target.
Stand-in goalkeeper Alistair Bradley was the hero as City of Peterborough men made progress in the National Over 50s Cup. Bradley, who had only played one previous match in goal, made a crucial penalty save as City won a shoot-out 8-7 against Norwich City. Neil Burford scored both City goals in a 2-2 draw.
