Players are lucky Chris Turner isn’t the manager
This was no way to mark the anniversary of the famous Posh cup win over Liverpool.
And fair to say Chris Turner, the manager on that magnificent night, would have had harsher words to say in public of a quite pitiful Posh performance than Grant McCann uttered.
McCann, who is basically a very decent man, was presumably protecting players who had ‘suffered’ two games a week throughout November so unlucky for him that chairman Darragh MacAnthony was in attendance.
MacAnthony is not one to shy away from confrontaton, especially when he’s travelled over 4,000 miles to support his side in person, arriving just a few hours before kick off.
His anger must have kept him awake for most of the night, along with mental mathematics calculations on how to fund the necessary improvements to the squad in January when you’ve just announced a £1.4 million loss for the last financial year.
This desperate display against a National League side will have confirmed the current side lack the fullbacks, the overall depth and the striking support for Jack Marriott to be seen as serious promotion contenders.
Woking’s post-match reaction to this result told the story perfectly. They were thrilled to find a late equaliser to cancel out
Ryan Tafazolli’s 24th-minute goal, but most disappointed they hadn’t won, such was their overall control of the second round FA Cup contest.
Posh ‘keeper Jonathan Bond’s fine penalty save to thwart Chez Isaac just before the break was the main reason for that. Bond also saved well from former Posh midfielder Kane Ferdinand in the final minute just before Woking goalscorer Joe Ward’s deep cross rattled the crossbar. Woking were hugely superior in possession and looked the far morecommitted side. Tafazolli and Steven Taylor were forced to play strongly at the heart of the Posh defence.
Alex Penny conceded the penalty and was given such a runaround at right back, he must have been dangerously dizzy at the end.
