Creating Rotarians of the future

- By Janet Cooke - email: janet.4.cooke@btinternet.com

These are the Rotarians of the future. 2017 was a very special school year for the Interact Club at The Deepings School as it marked the club’s 10th anniversary. Established by Deepings Rotary Club in 2007, they currently have 20 members.

This year’s president TaylaMai said: “Taking part and being president of Interact has increased my ability to communicate with others and take leadership.

“I have developed skills that have made me a better person.

“The most rewarding event was the trip to Wicksteed Park with the children of Chernobyl.

“I am so grateful for this opportunity.”

The club organises fundraising activities during the year, including a quiz night, an Era Night, Colour Run and bake sales.

Over the 10 years the club has raised many thousands of pounds for good causes.

Members regularly help out at community events, including the Deepings Rugby Club bonfire night and Market Deeping Christmas Market.

Some members went out with the Rotary-Lions Santa sleigh on its annual tour of the Deepings area.

Interact co-ordinator Tom Johnson, of Deepings Rotary, said: “Interact has been part of my life for the last 10 years.

“The young people who become Interactors are a great credit to Rotary, their school and our community.

He said: “They are conscientious, caring and excellent fund raisers; wonderful ambassadors for our young adults and teenagers.”

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people aged from 12 to 18.

It gives them the opportunity to have fun while participating in a variety of meaningful service projects, develop leadership skills and get involved in the local community.

What happens when Interactors reach 18 years of age, but feel too young to join Rotary?

They can join Rotaract which provides an opportunity for young men and women aged 18 to 30 to enhance their knowledge and skills and further advance their personal development.

They can continue to address the physical and social needs of their communities.

The good news is that Rotaract is thriving again in Peterborough.

Members are meeting regularly, organised a Zumbathon and are currently arranging ambitious fundraisers.

They plan to field a team at Ortons quiz night on March 16 (the sponsoring Rotary club) and to assist with Ortons Duck Race at Ferry Meadows in June.

They are busy planning a sponsored bike ride and have a fundraising disco in place at The Phone Inn Club on April 28 th . As well as a lot of fun there will be a raffle and an auction to raise money for Sue Ryder.

Tickets are just £5.

If you are in the 18 to 30 age group why not go along, it could be the best decision ever. Email: prewen@aol.com
