The two city schools enjoying fine runs in English Schools FA Cup competitions suffered narrow defeats in their quarter-final ties last week.

Nene Park Academy made the long trip to Liverpool to face St Francis Xavier’s College and were pipped 1-0 after extratime in the Under 15 competition while Hampton College were 3-2 losers to the Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic School in Brighton in the Under 16 cup.

Hampton were below their best and fell 1-0 down in the first half and conceded a second goal soon after the restart.

Brad Gilbert pulled a goal back on the hour mark, but the hosts scored again almost immediately.

Jazliegh Fife missed a penalty for Hampton five minutes from time before scoring three minutes later, but there wasn’t time for an equaliser.

“The pitch was a ploughed field on a slope,” grumbled Hampton coach Michael Goode. “It wasn’t ideal for a national cup quarter-final, but not a lot you can do about it.”

A total of 626 teams entered the Under 15 competition and 544 teams set out looking for Under 16 glory.

Nene Park were beaten finalists in the Under 15 competition last season.

UNDER 18 NORTHANTS CUP

Peterborough Sports claimed a major scalp in the semi-final of the Northants Under 18 Cup by deservedly beating a strong Peterborough United youth team 2-1.

Posh fielded two professionals in Maltese youth international Andrew Borg and defender Sam Carwright, but were outplayed by a team from the Peterborough Youth League.

Jack Eldrige and Kian Meadows scored for Sports, who had Jamie Scott and Henry Nkobi in outstanding form.

Sports first-team manager Jimmy Dean said: “What a fantastic performance from our Under 18s in beating a very strong Posh team.

“Full credit to the manager, his staff and all his players who made it a special night for the club and one I’ll admit I thouroughly enjoyed.”

Sports knocked out another full-time professional outfit Northampton Town in the quarter-finals. They will take on AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the final later this season. Posh: Allen, Hart, Strachan, Maddison, Fosu, Cartwright, Rolt, Barker, Davison, Borg, Shackleton.

PFA 125th ANNIVERSARY

The Peterborough Football Association hosted another of their 125 Year celebratory matches on Sunday.

The match saw a Peterborough FA Veterans XI managed by Darren Fogg take on an England Amateur Veterans XI at Stamford AFC and it resulted in a comfortable win for the local side.

Darren Paling set the pace with a brace to see Peterborough go 2-0 up and centre -forward Matt Leftley added a third before half-time.

The second half saw Nigel Beer score for England before Stephen Starkey converted a one-on-one with the keeper to seal a 4-1 win.

Derek Gibson, the Peterborough FA 125th year organiser, thanked Stamford AFC for their support and Vivacity for the provision of momentoes. He also thanked the match officials Dave Bryan, Reg Parker, Shaun Gray and Lee Hartley.

The final 125th year celebration match will be between Peterborough United Ladies and Northampton Town on a date to be arranged at the ABAX Stadium.
